I am about to buy a notebook to use with Linux. Is there any particular one brand that is better than the others?

The only thing to consider when buying a laptop with the plans of putting Linux on it is that since most manufacturers do not release drivers for Linux, and if they do they don't release them with the hardware. So living on the bleeding edge of tech is often going to have hardware difficulty under linux. Your best bet is to get a mainstream laptop that hasn't JUST been released. Widescreen laptops seem to require some tweaking, but as I have never installed on a widescreen (plan to post my experiences with this when I get my Fujitsu N6010 in a week or so) Modems also tend to be a problem, as well as built in card readers. You can usually get everything working with some tweaking, although more and more is working "out of the box"

Do not, I repeat, do not get a laptop with a radeon card if you are planning on doing 3d work via games or other apps.
Nvidia users have a strict advantage when dealing with linux. -
