So last night I'm just listening to some music when I decide to go to sleep. I shut down normally, and today I go to boot up, it hangs as soon as I enter my login credentials.

I'm not really sure what information I can post as I'm not even sure where to start. Any advice?

If it makes any difference, I used the mini iso file with an external cd drive to install hardy on the X60, and from command line installed Kubuntu-desktop. I also encrypted my drive with the command line install.

    Thanks in advance.

Has it started just after you installed Kubuntu-desktop?

nope..it happened a few days after.

I actually found some relevant information where the DCOPserver files were owned by root instead of the user..i changed those files using chown user.user "filename"

now im stuck at an endless kde login screen..

can you log in in 'failsafe' mode (recovery?)

do you mean when grub boots hit esc and go to (recovery), or at the kde login, go to failsafe session?

    i can do both...

right now im trying to figure out how to mount my encrypted /dev/sda5 in backtrack 3 or knoppix to copy data off the drive and go from there.

can only do so much with a few hours a night to tinker.

DCOP is the Desktop COmmunications Protocol. It is critical to starting the desktop. Use the CLI to return the ownership of the files back to the root user.

well i managed to login to console and get a desktop...

i deleted .xauthority, rebooted, startx, transferred what i needed (nothing important...just some documents/pictures)

and now im going to reinstall kubuntu when i get home...i dont feel like deeling with encrypted drives right now..with my experience, its too much of a hassle for me right now.

    thanks for the help all.
