On Lenovo z710 - ubuntu 12.04 was working - but unfortunately have to reformat HD and start over and now rebuilding. So far most of the things are back but for some reason this time won't find external HDI drivers (?!? - prior installation found 3 of them and I was able to activate them) - as a result internal microphone is not working - other things are ok.

There are actually certain versions of the Inspiron 17R with a FHD display (and a version of the Z710 with a HD+ display).

At the same resolution, I'd go with the 17R because I believe the screen is matte instead of glossy like the Z710.

We have a 17R in our household. It's 900p glossy, touch optional. 1080p matte is reserved for the now-discontinued 17R SE, which has been replaced by the Dell Inspiron 17 7000.
