I am still in middle of installing. If anyone had done, just share your feeling.

I just installed it a short while ago... and I love it! It works better than Feisty (so far), and the built-in effects are definitely a bonus.
-
i hope its not just me, but i have a T61 thinkpad,
and i tried installing 7.10 64bit edition AND the x86 one ,neither worked.
i got the black screen of death.
and i also changed BIOS mode to compatability AND ahci. -
I'm having a hell of a time installing Firefox extensions, has anyone else had a problem?
-
here is my experience

Were you able to setup audio correctly? Just installed 7.10 on my V3000Z and don't have sound. Other than that there doesn't seem to be any major hiccups. -
Did you guys resize your NTFS partitions, or do clean installs?
-
Currently, no luck yet. I download the x86, and not very stable to get to usual boot up running. Wander why it ask me the user name even I boot from CD.
I didn't make a clean install. I had my 7.04 on machine. Will download again, and see if error still there. -

(You can find the version of your kernel by typing the code below into a terminal)
Code:uname -r

Also if you dont have enough ram you cant really run a live CD, 512 is a good amount.
Try the "alternate" cd, its not a liveCD and you will get less errors, also check to make sure the MD5 is alright after you burn the CD. -
i choose ' start or install ubuntu'
it goes to the next screen, and i see a bunch of stuff loading and [OK].
a minute after everything is loaded, black screen
i even tested the cd, and it said no errors found.
i'll try the alternate cd -
Did you move the mouse? Same thing happened to me, but under the black screen was the desktop. Just move your cursor and I'd expect to see the desktop.
At least, that's how it worked for me on multiple boots with the Live CD. -
You may try to use the Safe Graphics mode on the live CD, it works =). You may also find http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki
useful on using linux on thinkpad machines -

Hmm... I find that standby doesn't work properly anymore. In Edgy and Feisty, I was able to resume from standby properly (by pressing the power button). In Gutsy, it seems like it responds and tries to wake from standby if I press ANY button, but it just doesn't get back to the desktop and it hangs...
Oh well. I like everything else about Gutsy so far. -
It's a problem with EVERY extension, I've tried random popular extensions that I've gotten first hand reports of working, like flashgot. I did find a bug report, if anyone is interested. -

I recompiled ALSA following the ubuntu guide for 7.04 (hda-intel howto) and discovered that /proc/asound/card0 does not exist.
I used version 1.0.15.
Still no sound and I can't launch alsaconf as well (damn sudo, I want my su back EDIT: I have it back! Now i want a root login!!!).
In kanotix it worked like a charm. -
For root login, in a shell, type 'sudo su -'
Then, you'll have a root shell with a hash prompt (#).
'passwd root' to create/change the root password.
Then, you can log in as root from the xdm/gdm login screen if you set it to user fields (not auto-login or pictures). -

Actually, I am giving up the new install. Instead, I am upgrading now. I remember it happened when 7.04 was fresh released. There had boot problem for the first month, and they silently fixed it.
-
Alright, I got the Firefox addon problem solved, it was just an issue with ipv6. All I had to do was disable it and general network use is much faster, and I can install addons again.
-
My installation went relatively smooth. Just 2 minor road bumps:
1. Doesn't recognize my video card (GeForce 8600M GT)
The screen went blank while it tried to look for drivers, it took a while too. At least now it's smart enough to default to VESA when all else fails.
If you're having problems with blank screens, try waiting a bit, at least until your drive stops spinning.
2. Stuck at 82% "Scanning Mirrors"
Apparently, it's contacting the repo servers for updates, unfortunately, the servers were as slow as molasses due to being swamped from everyone trying to upgrade. I disabled my net connection and it continued installing.
As a side effect of me skipping that step of the installation, all entries in my sources.list was commented out, I restored it using System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager > Settings > Download From > Other > Select Best Server. Ended up with some server in New Zealand, blazing fast compared to the swamped 56k speeds of the official Ubuntu servers.
The eye candy is really impressive.Spent an hour just playing with it. Started up 14 concurrently playing videos just to see them in the Cube and Expo.
Also, Restricted Drivers Manager offered to install the nVidia drivers and it worked. No need for Envy!
Going to do my second install, time to check out Xubuntu.
(Asus G2S-A1)
Hardware that still doesn't work out of the box:
Webcam
Built-in Microphone
Fixed from Feisty:
CDRW
Wireless
Bluetooth -
i upgraded from 7.04 to 7.10
so far so good on my Asus w5. Its even fixed my video playback bug i had with beryl. And my bluetooth works too
no complaints here so far

It's no longer necessary since shortly after posting I set the root password and enabled root login. Thank you for confirming that there is no picture for the root user.
Is it normal that, in the properties for the root user, all the checkboxes for the privileges be unticked?
I ticked them all, but I have this hunch that it is immaterial wheter they are ticked or not. Am I wrong? -
-
anyone know how to disable the laptop screen so i can use it with 2 19 inch lcds? its a T61 if that helps
-
I went from Edgy -> Feisty , and it was awful, X was screwed, not sure why. Fortunately Gutsy came a few days later so I upgraded and X is still not working properly. Every time it loads, it says it couldn't recognize my screen and video card so I'm stuck with low graphics mode. I configure it manually (1680x1050 and fglrx), reboot, and again, it forgets everything. No eye candy for me
Suggestions?
thnx. -
Have you tried a clean install?
-
I was trying to avoid a clean install, but anyway, I fixed it by reinstalling the xorg-driver-fglrx, and now everything works fine. It was easier than I expected.
So far, everything looks great, except for amsn which is uglier than usual. -
Well, tried almost everything from recompiling alsa to what ever suggestions I could find on the ubuntu forums and the web. Even tried the 64bit version. Unfortunately the sound doesn't seem to work. I think I'll try it out on my older R3000 which is gathering dust and hopefully I will have better luck with that and leave my main system to XP.

Audio problem? Speaker not muting when a headphone jack plug-in? Go to this site for the fix!
Gutsy Gibbon's Intel HD Audio Controller
For the most part, you would need to install the latest alsa-oss for audio to work. However, some sound card would not mute when a headphone is plug-in. -
First I upgraded to Gutsy Gibbon from Feisty Fawn and that did not go so well. Everytime I log in I get a message about a HAL error. I also lost my wireless card and ability to use CPU Frequency Scaling.
Ok so since that went bad I decided to go a clean install using a recent minefield release of Wubi. I don't know if it was a Wubi issue or not but when I copied fonts to my fonts folder my laptop froze. It could also have been due to something that I uninstalled cause I uninstalled some programs that I never use in Ubuntu.
Nevertheless I think I will try again using an official stable Wubi release. -
Well, good and bad.
For good: I upgrade my desktop to 7.10. The 7.10 messed up my compiz fusion. But it consider a success upgrade. Will figure out the driver later.
For bad: My laptop came with black screen after boot to 6.22.14. I don't even know if it is freeze or not. Can't switch to text terminal -
do you have a dock? if so then yes you can. does your t61 have both DVI and VGA?
the real ubuntu forums are a good place to start for those kinda things... I'm guessing your thinkpad had a ATI card in it? you can play with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get it going after installing the appropriate drivers but best do some research into it before you begin. oh and make a backup of your xorg.conf before you start.

Installed flawlessly on an ASUS S96S, everything works except the webcam (driver in development, though) and touchpad disable button.
The button can be re-enabled by putting the SHMConfig option in the Synaptics Touchpad driver section of xorg.conf.
I couldn't find a simple utility to enable/disable Wireless LAN, Wired LAN, Bluetooth, Firewire and the Card Reader so I coded one:
http://socketbind.drogos.hu/asus-s96s/
It is simple, stupid and in early stages. Should work with all ASUS notebooks.
Also, you can find some remarks about running Linux on this notebook here. -
My experience has been really great so far. Everything works out of the box, including graphics, wireless, Standby, and Hibernate. Only thing I haven't tested is the media card reader. I even got the correct resolution out of the box, which is a first for ANY operating system I've ever used. Compiz remains working after suspend and hibernate, which is great; hibernate didn't work at all in Feisty. I still get the weird voltage spikes to my screen when going into hibernate like I did in Edgy, though.
Codecs have all been installed correctly and automatically (including Flash... finally!), and my iTunes library works fine in Rythmbox. This is seriously the easiest operating system install I've ever had. I almost feel cheated, because there's pretty much nothing for me to do. -
Only had two problems on my Dell 600m. The usplash screen wasn't working at first, but it turned out to just be a simple config edito to change the screen resolution. A bit more problematic was that wireless wasn't working out of hibernation, but that was an easy fix too. Now my only problem is that I have no splash screen but instead pitch black when the computer is hibernating or coming out of hibernation. Not bad at all, I think.

I finally decided to try 7.10 final release (the BETA wouldn't boot and I didn't mess around with fixing it), and the download is so slow! I tried a bunch of different mirrors, but I think its because of both my University and the mirror currently having lots of traffic. I will report back if I get it done tonight. PS. I a m downloading at about 17 Kbps right now.

My laptop even doesn't boot at all.
I wander if existing Feisty block the CD boot. How do I take the old feisty off without wipe off XP? -

eh i upgraded using the alternate cd from feisty to gutsy. The process was somewhat painless except i had to uninstall my foreign language support manually (weird).
My beef (on my desktop) with 7.10 was that it automatically enabled xgl, which is fine in a lot of cases except for that my desktop does not run xgl very well at all. I was seeing all of the triangles and shapes being drawn and wiped away... so i had to get rid of that.
My other beef (on my laptop) was with the screen dimming controls. Even if i uncheck the box "dim on idle", it will still change my screen brightness (it would either dim or "un-dim" on its own).
These issues encouraged me to go back to 7.04, just until they work out more bugs maybe. -
Ubuntu 7.10 works really well on my XPS M1330. Almost everything works out of the box. The nVidia 8400M GS was recognised automatically: on first boot I got the window to enable the nVidia restricted driver, activating it was just a mouseclick. All the Compiz Fusion effects look nice.
The only thing that does not work properly is the built-in webcam. Ubuntu recognises the device (in the hardware list I can see that it knows there's a webcam), but when I try to run a program like camorama I get an error message that it can't open /dev/video0. -
Ubuntu 7.10 works great on my T61. I made a new partition for it, keeping 32-bit XP as well. I had to install it using the "safe graphics mode" or I would get a black screen as well. I did not have to use the alternate CD though.
Video works great, Compiz is perfect, sound is perfect, wireless and wired network is perfect. My screen defaulted to 1440x900, which was nice. I haven't burned a DVD or CD, but I've had no problem using Feisty on my desktop burning lots of them. I doubt it'd be a problem now. Built-in NTFS works great, I can mount and use the XP partition without any problems.
The only issue I have is with the dock. While I'm plugged into the dock Ubuntu always wants to use the external monitor instead of the laptop screen. Usually I'm using that monitor with another computer, with a KVM. It seems confused as to which I should be using.
I would say so long as you have Intel or NVidia components just about any laptop should work pretty well out of the box. -
I've been really happy with 64bit Gutsy with my HGL30, but I've been running it since the beta's on my laptop. My main issue is that sometime between Feisty and Gutsy my brightness keys stopped working properly, and the sound card still has an issue where kmilo won't change the selected master channel in kmix. But since things have been upgraded so much and I've dorked with so many configurations, I'm going to install the 32bit version from scratch and see if that fixes anything.

I booted up a Live of Gutsy 32-bit. I like it, but for right now I won't switch from Vista. I rely too much on some things like OneNote that I don't have access to easily in Linux. It is nice though, the Ubuntu team is doing some good work.
-
I should point out a couple things on my Thinkpad T61 and Ubuntu 7.10. Only two problems -
1. Brightness keys do not work, nor to sleep/awake or the radio control key (fn+f5). This is a known issue on the Thinkwiki site. You can alt-cnt-f1 into a terminal and the keys will work, but not while using a graphical display.
2. Power drainage is significantly worse in Ubuntu than XP. Ubuntu just doesn't have the smart battery minder software that Lenovo bundled in with the Windows OS.
Otherwise I love it.
