So I been having problems with Ubuntu 7.10. I swear it's worst than even any beta version of Ubuntu that I have tried. The last 3 Versions of Ubuntu were Great. Why so many bugs in this version?
I decided to Install Mint 4.0 instead, since it's based on Ubuntu. I didn't know what I was missing.I installed gnome and love the differences vs Ubuntu gnome, Mainly the Menu Setup. I also like the Software Portal Link. It took me a moment to realize that the Lock icon on panel was the Update tool. Why a Lock?

I'm still messing around with it as I just install it, but my first impression of Mint is Very Good.

What wireless card do you have?
& does wireless work? -
I have a Atheros. Works perfectly fine with Mint as it did with Ubuntu. But on many other distros I seem to have problems.
-
Do you know if Broadcom support is better in Mint?
-
Sorry, I wouldn't know that from personal experience. But here is a quote from Ubuntu Forums.
-
Hmm,
I'm definitely trying Mint later on. -
Well glad you got that working. Since my WPA2 enabled network connection just refuses to pair up on an Intel 3945ABG. Oh wait, I just swapped it out for an Atheros AR500 series draft n 2.0! I may give Daryna a shot again!!

I definitely like to use mint over ubuntu, but I guess I'm jaded from the time I had an ati card and ubuntu couldn't properly detect my 1280x800 without me going to xorg.conf
That being said, at least for me, mint hasn't automatically detected my broadcom things, but it comes with ndiswrapper (something ubuntu does not, which is a hassle) so I can easily install the broadcom infs. -
I would be very interested in wifi support as well... I tried everything to get my 1505 Dell Wifi N working with no luck.
-
I installed it yesterday. I know pretty much nothing about Linux and I was surprised and pleased to find just about everything working. The only things I had to setup manually were Sound and Desktop Effects, but a quick Google search solved all of that. Overall, so far, a very good experience.

i had problems with envy when i used mint
and besides, i hate how using mint makes me feel like i'm using a "watered-down" ubuntu. mint is good, but ubuntu is overall the better linux distro in my eyes

Everything works for me OTB in Ubuntu so well that it's scary....love it. About the orange theme, Emerald to the rescue. Would like to try Mint, but why mess up a good thing? I did like Sabayon/Gentoo but I had to manually click to connect to the net everytime....that didn't cut it for me, although it very well could have been my Linux stupidity
-
-
Yep....you've got completely different hardware than me. I'll give mint a try next time I hose my linux partition
-
EVERYTHING has worked out of the box....kidna....its really great. -
-
From what I gather, better hardware support upon a fresh install, better multi-media experience, and no eye slitting orange.
The last of which was enough to get me to start looking elsewhere. I just could not get rid of that orange bootup background no matter what I tried. -
Woohoo, Linux Mint working perfectly now that I threw away that atrocious Intel 3945ABG and now running Atheros AR5008X
-
-
OK...I'm convinced. I'm running off a live Mint CD right now....think I'm going to keep it....seems like Ubuntu with a better menu system.
Obviously my wireless card is working.
-
Running Mint right now, wired connection wroks out of the box (desktop), but the wireless N card (dell) is not being read on my laptop... oh well...
Pretty cool stuff, was wondering if there are any programs, etc. that i can run to make it look a bit more flashy (e.g. Ubuntu-Beryl-ish)... -
Yup my 3945 running OTB too.

After reading this thread I decided to burn a copy of Mint to try it out since Ubuntu couldn't even boot to the desktop.
I thought Mint was going to work this time around, I even heard sound from the speakers as it was booting off the CD. But the system stopped a little bit after the speakers came on. too bad. -
I had to reboot 4 times before the Live CD actually gets me to the desktop =/
-
one (noob) question: If I'm running it off of LiveCD, how will the isntall work (as it won't work permanetnly, I don't think); will it work at all, or do i need to install/partition my HD? -
-
The easiest way to Fully install is to make a portion of your disk have Unallocated space. Then it will give you the option at install for "guided mode" for unallocated space(Not Entire Disk). You can use Gparted to make unallocated space by resizing or deleting a partition. -
Everything working perfectly in Mint 4.0 ...now going to set up XP Virtual Machine again....I've been using Vmware Server....is Virtual Box any better? I can download VMware through Synaptic...
-
I'm really impressed w/ Mint; internet browsing is much faster, although this may be just because of the FF browser.
I'll be sure to keep it, although I'm not ready to commit to a full install yet (incidentally, how much HD does the initial install take up)? -
-
Personally I found Vista to be quicker and more table but still, that thing is addicting xD.
The install took 5GB for me. -
Hmm...
It's sped up my old desktop (512MB SDRAM, abt. 30ish GB HD space left, 1.9GHz P4 processor), although my newer machine (w/ 2.2GHz DC, 4GB RAM, abt. 90 GB HD left, GeForce8600M 256MB DDR@) seems to like Vista just as much.
I'm seriously debating installing this thing; as a barebones OS w/ no eyecandy, it's spectacular (although I admit some Beryl/Compiz Fusion action would be pretty sweet)... -
Well the Beryl/Compiz is on Mint & Regular Ubuntu 7.10 already out of the box. You just need to install the Advance Settings apps to config it.
-
How is the battery life with Linux Mint? I noticed in Ubuntu I get only 2hrs compared to 4hrs in XP/Vista. Both underclocked to 800MHz. Is the battery life the same in both distributions or different? I can't really test since I spent half the day restoring my HDD partition structure to factory defaults.

Virtual Box has a display option called "seamless desktop" I think...where it appears everything is running right on the Linux desktop. I didn't see that with Vmware Server, or did I miss something?
-
OK, I googled and found THIS ......I think I know what you mean now. VMware can't do that. That's pretty amazing. I'm going to give it a try.
-
Yeah, I've been using VMware up to now....but when I switched to Mint from Ubuntu I gave VirtualBox a try....you can install from Synaptic....pretty slick.
-
What's the performance difference when running from the VM rather than natively?
Linux isn't ressource heavy when running on a high machine so? -
JCMS, well I put a copy of Xp Pro I had in the VM....it runs pretty fast...but it's just there to run some business programs I use (work out of the house CPA), maybe a couple of others that don't need to run fast.
Interesting, I switched to 'seamless mode' with ONE window running (XP Control Panel), and then it appeared to be running directly on the linux desktop. So I thought, cool, now what will happen if I close that ONLY window open? I did and it crashed...not linux, the virtual screen...I right clicked virtualbox in the panel to close, and it did ask me to power off the virtual machine, so the program itself didn't crash. I think this is a bug, it should have just switched back to 'windowed VM' mode after closing the last open window. Or did I set something wrong? anyone follow me? -
I installed Mint on an old GX150 tower and it works like a champ, but I just can't get it to work on my e1705. I've burned the disc twice from two different downloads (MD5 hashes match) on the lowest speed but still no dice. The desktop loads with no menu or icons; it just sits there. In the meantime I installed Gutsy so I could jump back into the Linux world.
Any pointers on how to get the LiveCD to actually finish loading?
Also - for anyone who has the AR5008 chipset (mini card or Expresscard slot), you can get it working if you install the development madwifi drivers. Unfortunately, it only connects on 802.11g, which is a definite pain in the backside. Also, the light on my DWA-643 never comes on at all, even when it connects to my network. I tried the ndiswrapper/1.20 drivers from D-Link, but I could never get the thing to connect to my network. -
Kego....I'm in FL too btw
I was having strange problems like that using RW media that I grabbed out of my son's room and didn't realize it was RW rather than a CD-R. Whoever said 'don't use RW' was right on. Keep trying, there is a ghost in there somewhere.
-
I finally got the disc to boot completely, once I removed my DWA-643 from the expresscard slot. It's odd that the Ubuntu disc worked with the card installed, but the Mint disc kicked up a display driver error during the boot process with the card installed.
Oh well, it's a bit too late now, since I'm pretty happy with Gutsy and all of the stuff I've installed today. When I get a bigger drive I might install both of them and share a /home partition.
Linux MINT is AWESOME!!!
