Thanks OP you made me day, downloading NOW. My favorite Linux Distro just got better, love the brushed aluminum look ala Itunes. :)

You're in for a treat everyone. I'm typing from Mint 10

It looks very stylish/modern, the brushed gun metal look is fantastic. Oh and from a USB thumb drive Mint 10 boots in under 10 seconds :D

Would you guys rate Mint better or worse than Ubuntu for a complete Linux novice?

    BEST

I consider myself a noob and Mint feels like any other full production OS. Everything is there and works, so very little tweaking is necessary if you don't want to be bothered with it.

LOL, if you want Linux with training wheels then Mint is it and 85-90% of the stuff you use in Windows is already available out of the box including Open Office. :)

All I got's to say is, this is one helluva OS right out of the box. I thought Mint 9 was sweet out of the box and this must have been made with high fructose because this is even better LOL. :)

edit: I stand by what I said earlier, this is a full fledge professional OS that can be sold alongside Windows and OS X, it's that good.

I just got my junker back up and running.Dang Vista and Spy Sweeper don't wanna play well together. Now I'm gonna download Mint 10 and make a bootable flash drive and try it on my GF's new Acer.I'm off to look for a flash drive. How much memory is needed? If I make changes or additions to Mint, will it be saved to the flash drive or the hard drive?

a 4gb drive will work good. if you use livelinuxusb it will let you make a persistence file that will save all your changes and let you save files. nothing will be written to the hard drive. I did try it with mint 10 and got an error at the end but it still seemed to work. I've probably used it 20-30 times with mint, ubuntu, and other distros and its always worked well.

Any idea when their full debian based version of Mint will be out. And beside the obvious shorter upgrade times what other advantages will that have over Mint 10?

I came across this info on the Mint startup page. It may be old news to most but just posting this for those who may have missed it. ;)

"Since Mint 10 RC was release, I’ve received many questions, so here’s a little Q&A:

    Upgrading to Mint 10:

    - Will I be able to upgrade from Mint 10 RC to Mint 10 stable without reinstalling?

–> Yes, simply apply any level 1 and 2 updates that appear in the Update Manager. "

Hey fellas how can I go about installing this aero glass theme in Mint 10? I downloaded the file and opened it with the Mint 10 Theme Installer. It says this file is invalid. What do I need for this to work. :)

I also tried this trick and it helps but boy would I love to get that aero theme to run. Tips and Tricks for Ubuntu after Installation

In Ubuntu you can set nearly the same aero glass effect to window borders with alpha transparency as available in Windows 7.

    1) Press Alt+F2 to bring up "Run Application" window.

    2) Type gconf-editor into the box, click "Run" to bring up Configuration Editor.

    3) Browse to apps > gwd, look for "metacity_theme_active_opacity" on the right panel.

    4) Change the value in "metacity_theme_active_opacity" from 1 to 0.75 (or smaller such as 0.5 for more transparency).

    5) Then go to System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager
Select "Effects" from the left panel.

    6) Tick "Blur Windows" and click the "Close" button. (Note: default values in Blur Windows can be applied.)

Looking great. After a HDD failure I just upgraded my Envy14 to the Momentus XT 500gb Hybrid drive, so I'm left seeking what distros to install. The unfortunate necessity of Windows 7 is in place and I just installed Arch Linux x64, one of my favorite distros. Anyone who knows about Arch knows that a new Arch install just gives you a CLI and it can take a little time if you're still new to Linux to get it up into a usable state and foul-ups can easily slice oneself using a bleeding edge distro.

With this in mind, I'm thinking of using gparted to resize my Arch /home partition down 100gb or so, and install another distro to Tri-boot. At the moment, I've been vacillating over Ubuntu 10.10 x64 or Mint 10 x64. Its seems that Mint is really going the extra mile to add to Ubuntu's base and I've been happy with using Mint 9 as one of my go-to LiveCDs. Glad to see they're moving forward.

Anyone weigh in who has used both Mint 10's RC and Ubuntu 10.10 both x64? I'm especially interested in the ease of running multilib to get access to 32 bit stuff when necessary. Thanks!

This is freekin sweet.I downloaded Mint 10 RC Julian and made a bootable disc using Ashampoo Burning Studio Free.I got Ashampoo Burning Studio Free from Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com .Of course it's free.I am running Mint 10 as a live CD right now.First freeking time I ever step outside Windows.I may skip the bootable USB and just get another HD or do a dual boot.Just for giggles, here's a screen shot of my desktop.

I simply love Mint. Its my fav OS. Particularly Julia has nice brushed metal theme/UI, and I love it.
But certain websites (mistake of developers) are not fully compatible with FF, hence with Mint.
So have to setup a dual boot with Windows :(

Mostly it's sufficient to alter the user agent string of your browser, so that it identifies itself as IE.
In other situations another Linux browser than Firefox can help you out. Webkit-based browsers like Midori, Arora or Konqueror (3; i'm not sure if 4 is still based on Webkit) have some things in common with Safari and might therefore work on sites that accept Safari but not Firefox.

If you apply both Mint 10 core updates it will convert RC to Stable which is per the Mint 10 RC FAQ.

Can anyone tell me which kernel is used in Mint 10? I need to use kernel 2.6.33 or later so that I can enable TRIM for my SSD. Older kernels don't have TRIM capability.

Both supend to RAM and disk work fine under Debian Squeeze.
