I need adjustable dpi, compiz (for changing the darkness of individual windows, and for zooming), dual monitors (twinview), and dark themes.

Which one would be the best?

Do gnome themes work on MATE?

The only thing I know for sure is that Gnome 2 themes do indeed work for Mate. I'd say check out the live cds for all three and see which one you like the most. They all have their pros and cons. There's also "cinnamon", but that uses Gnome 3 libraries I believe.
