Any idea how to get 1440 x 900 resolution in Mint 3.1? The max., in fact the only, resolution is 1024 x 768.

This should work. Open a terminal window:

    sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then where the resolutions are add, add yours in the format that they use. I am in Windows, so I can't give a sample, but its straight forward when you try to do it.

Thanks, I saw where the resolutions were in the file and added the 1440 x 900, but it didn't show as an option even after rebooting. It's not that important ... thanks for the suggestion though.

Install the closed source graphics drivers. Or if using Intel, then try the 195resolution package.
