Heard some rumors that Mint may be moving towards being more debian based than Ubuntu based ? Is this true ? Will it be basedon debian stable ? That would be awesome.

I thought that this would be your answer; does all the work required to take a design based on Ubuntu and basing it on Debian packages instead make it worth that gain in stability?

You realize that they basically have to rebuild Mint using Debian packages, while keeping Mint basically the same? Its a lot of hours. ;)

How hard would that be? Isn't Ubuntu already based on Debian?

Not so much anymore. There are a lot of differences between Ubuntu and Debian packages for different software.

There is a Debian based alpha for Mint but they will keep the Ubuntu base indefinitely unless clem decides to change it alluvasudden.

All I can say is that MEPIS is a polished distro, has a great forum...I would be using it except that my wireless (in sig) isn't supported OTB yet. The debian etch repo's is what they use.

Yes, but for the vast majority of packages the way it goes is:

Ubuntu package = Debian package + Ubuntu modifications

And the Ubuntu packages track the modifications made to the Debian packages. It does not mean that all changes in Debian trickle "as is" to Ubuntu but Ubuntu is continually incorporating the changes made to Debian.

So Ubuntu is still very much based on Debian even if the tweaking made by the Ubuntu developers is getting more and more extensive.

I tired out Mepis two or three years ago and I wasn't really impressed. I really don't remember much on why I didn't like it but I got rid of it pretty quick. Hardware video problem I think.

Anyways, I'd make a vm or just run Ubuntu then try to install Mepis.
