I am looking into turning my old dinosaur laptop into a Linux machine and host my own email address from my house. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with that and can shoot me towards the right direction. If it can be encrypted too that would be bomb but not 100% necessary. More info the better BTW.
The machine is an old P4 2GHz something with a radeon 9500 so i would assume it would be fast enough for linux and email. I would also through in and encrypt the hardrive with truecrypt...though i'll have to test that. The CPU might not handle truecrypt well.

Regarding encryption look into dm-crypt. I prefer it over truecrypt as its part of the kernel and it's completely transparent to the actual filesystem. Dovecot is a popular choice when it comes to mail server software as it's pretty lightweight and offers imap/pop3. Your machine should be able to handle it with ease.

You would be better off to do something like that on a Raspberry Pi. An old P4 machine is going to use a lot of energy on a yearly basis.

i don't think my P4 laptop will use that mcuh but i can check. Also can that be encrypted? Also what is open PGP? Is it any good or secure?
No idea what i am doing just starting to research this idea. It'll probably take me awhile to get this up and running.
I'll probably use the P4 until i can buy something else or re-purpose my netbook for it. I'll be buying a new ultrabook in the next 6-12 months so the P4 will do.
Linux and email software for home email server?
