Highlight of the story: The criminal monitoring program that he (and many other pirates that are caught) has to use only works with Windows.
Ummmm, too bad. You steal from others, you deal with the consequences. Too darn bad. -
That case is so unique. It would be a good case if he had to use the computer as a requirement, but since it's a privilege and not a requirement I guess no PC use for him. LOL
-
Why doesn't he use Wine?
-
That would be illegal. LOL
-
Cruel and Unusual punishment, indeed. Wonder if they're going to buy him Windows, or if he has to pirate it?
-
Cruel and Unusual? At least they're allowing him to use a PC. He could still be in jail.
-
You know, he broke the law, and he needs to be punished for that. But, at the same time, it is ridiculous that the government uses software that is only compatible with Windows and refuse to change or adapt or even support anything else. But hey, schools and businesses do it all the time Why would we hold to government to such a "high" standard?
-
he can have two pcs; so what?
-
Anyway, if you ever find yourself in this situation, I recommend installing cygwin. You'll be able to run all sorts of Linux programs on Windows. It's not as fast as running them on Linux though... but hey, there have to be some consequences for his crimes, right? -
yea or he could use wmvare and run linux through it
-
Did you even see what he did to break the law? Note that the movie still succeeded awesomely at the box office, and that he probably increased demand for the theatrical release, if anything. Either that, or charge him with crimes against humanity since it was Episode III that he uploaded
But even if he did deserve to be punished, I consider being forced to use Windows cruel and unusual -
I'm on his side too. He's saying "Yeah, I got caught. I'm a felon now. I'm ok with being monitored." But their monitoring program only runs on Windows. He'd be forced to buy a new copy of the OS, and no longer be able to use his software, because of an unnecessary technicality. That is a bit ridiculous.
It's not exactly like he murdered someone (Oh gods. He uploaded a copy of a movie, having 0 effect on its sales in theaters.). So slap him around for not obeying the rules you gave him, then let him go. He is a criminal, but he's right. -
He hasn't even considered using Linux offline? (Yeah, as if you can download pirated movies while offline...)
Why couldn't they just use a packet sniffer? -

is one of the comments that someone posted...

Yes, the media harped on that story. The moral of the story? Be attractive, famous, or rich, and you'll be let off easy.
