i'd like to learn more about linux so i want to install linux on my other partition and open it inside windows.
How can i do this and what dist do you recommend?
-

You won't actually install Linux in another partition - you'll run it in a virtual environment. There are a few apps that do this: VMWare and Virtualbox are only two of them. If you spend some time looking around, you should find a few threads where people asked the exact same question.
-
i understand that but i mean i have another partition to store it in and i want to run it from there so i don't waste space on this partition when saving.
which dist do them emulators use and which dist is best? i don't want it bigger than 500mb download also. -
You can run linux in a virtual machine, but I personally wouldn't bastardize linux by surrounding it with a rogue windows environment. It's just not pure
Got enough HD space? Dual boot it...you'll be glad you did. Plenty of help around these parts for doing that.
-
hmm i done that before but then i had troubles with my mouse so i'd preffer a virtual enviroment at least for now.
-
you can try VirtualPC (M$), WMwareServer beta (it's free) or VirtualBox....I like VirtualBox the best....all free. It's a good way to learn something about linux, you can always zap it easily if you want to dual boot down the road. So yes, good idea.
-
well i'm downloading WMware at the moment so i'll try that.
-
that'll work.....heck, while your at it, give PCBSD a shot in a VM environment just for grins
-
PCBSD? btw i'm trying a linux dist called dream
-
-
yea i will
-
how does dual booting screw up your mouse???
-
-
I dual boot but I don't see the point of running linux virtually. But whatever floats your boat I guess.
-
dual booting fixed my mouse lol , wasn't working in vista and booted into arch....works flawlessly. booted into windows and works again.
you wont enjoy linux in virtual machine
you mentioned you had free space....why no try wubi... -
-
i can't seem to get this to install to my HDD :l
-
What it does really is chooses the features from different OSes & chooses the best out of them -
i give up on DL it gets stuck at 8% my mate says he'll help me if i get ubuntu so i might as well try it..
-
If you install Ubuntu & it get stuck at 82% you can try the alternative disc(it should eventually move from 82% though). It just takes along time to scan the mirrors, even with no internet connection...
I recommend Zenwalk or openSUSE for you.
Here, take this & give us the results. -
Freespire
Ubuntu (cool)
mandriva
openSUSE (like u said)
just downloaded ubuntu and gonna put it on disc now. -
Hmmmm, I'd give Ubuntu a try & like the test said, openSUSE is worth trying.
By the looks of it, you seem fit for Gnome & KDE, so if you don't like Ubuntu you can always try Kubuntu or Xubuntu (xfce, but it looks kinda like Gnome). -
hmm well it turns out that i am dual booting, it made me do it :S lol
anyway this is quite nice although it will take some getting used to. -
What made you do it?
-
dunno lol but still i don't mind
-
Are you running the live cd?
-
not anymore, i've got it installed on my HDD on another partition from windows
-
Cool, how long did it take?
-
it took ten minutes at the most to install.
msn is kinda hard getting used to -
Really? Mine always scans the mirror for at least 30 minutes.
-
Just ask blackbird, I go through a distro a day whether I need to or not LOL
-
Same with me, I'm currently installing one distro & downloading 2
-
wine is quite a nice program to use it's intresting testing which windows applications it can and can't open.
-
I know, I don't think I need it though.
-
hmm music is a tad distorted, how can i see what drivers were installed?
Anyone know if there is a realtek HD audio driver? -
hmm i lost the bar at the top how can i get it back?
i kinda got it back but it's different oh well -
i agree linux msn alternatives are crap for those who like all those msn live funtions. pidgin is a load of crap, prefer kopete. also i hate it how if you have two accounts the all get logged into which is annoying whereas in msn you choose which one to log on to
also for wine, have you tried playonlinux ?? its a gui for wine, lets you install games with an easy wizard. il put up a video of it in action later -
cool, when i remove the top menu it screws up there's a small space at the top which is black if i open a window and then close it the title stays in that black space..
i'm on windows atm for visual basic 6 as i can't get it to work on linux yet
also how come when i played halo trial using wine there was no sound? -
-
Did you her? V.3 was released yesterday, downloading it know.
Direct Link from Softpedia -
-
I hope not, I may install it later...
-
Personally i hate xfce..its desktop icons look ugly with blue background behind them and its just not as functional.
Sabayon looks much better than Dreamlinux in my opinion -
Thats why I wouldn't say Dream Linux is my Fav.
Sabayon looks interesting though.
I like Gnome, KDE just doesn't cut it for me. -
also linux mint and opensuse both look better than dreamlinux -
All opinions, I like having Ubuntu & doing this.
