Windows once again annoyed the crap out of me today, it is time to switch.

I am currently downloading the 64bit version of it. Now the file is called "ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso".

Now for the probably most stupid question you've ever heard: I don't have an AMD64, I have an Intel Core Duo, will it run well?

And would you generally recommend Ubuntu for my laptop?

It would be great if you could help me with advice!

    Best regards

It will run on Core Duo. amd64 doesn't mean it is specialized for AMD processors. I don't know why they keep naming x64 versions like that though.
Dell has an outstanding support for Ubuntu. See here. Heck, they even sell lappys with Ubuntu on it. You won't have headaches using ubuntu on your machine.

Yeap. Dell support is great for Ubuntu. And if you *do* encounter any problems, Dell or the online community will help a lot. Basically, for a Linux beginner, you want to find a distro with a large online community and stable release cycles.

That AMD64 thing confused me at first, but it's just an really old name for 64bit. The newer term for it is x86_64, I think.
