This week's release of the Fedora 9 Linux distribution makes putting a full-fledged desktop on a portable USB thumb drive a three-click affair. Even better, you don't need Linux installed to create it, you can leave the data on your thumb drive untouched, and any files you create or settings you tweak remain in place the next time you boot up. After the jump, let's create a fully-functional desktop-to-go using a simple Windows program and a 1GB or larger thumb drive.

That is pretty cool
-
Tried fedora 9. Hmm, haven't had a LiveCD distro that couldn't detect my LCD correctly for a long while - I am less than thrilled.
However, it is good that more and more distros are featuring USB disk install option!
-
Question to those that have already tried installing on USB drives: would installing this on a high-speed USB stick give much better start-up/write speeds than on a normal speed USB?
(logically it should...) -
It should, I installed Ubuntu on my USB drive.
-
The live stick, as I like to call it, is very fast. I couldn't notice a difference between an actual install or the memory stick, probably because it runs in your RAM with the memory stick as the hard drive. The memory stick gets quite hot though.
-
I tried it but cant boot.Gets stuck at vmlinuz
-
Um... Format you USB drive first. Works perfectly for me and my 3 USB drives. One (8 GB) is running Fedora with Gentoo, one (4 GB) is running Linux Mint and the other (2 GB) carries all my Windows stuff.
-
i decided to try this, but it keeps telling me that there isnt enough room. I have a 4gb flash drive, i thought 1GB was enough?
-
I think it's quite a stupid idea to only make this for Windows. I wanted to do this in Ubuntu but they only have a download for Windows. Uhg...
-
Word.
I want to do this. Then I can h4x0rz p30p13z c0mput3rz...
-
Plenty of distro's support LiveUSB so you have a wide array of choices if you want.
-
Tcha. Totally. I have Puppy Linux on a flash drive.
-
I have DSL on a flash drive. It even has a 'install to USB' option on the Live CD.
-
Although i find Linux distro's like that to be useless to me as they don't give me full functionality or speed and i have no need/desire to run anything from USB. If i needed to though, i wouldn't wait to do so.

Hehehe....
-
I take it you don't game ;/
-
Don't game?
Open source games!(there are a few good ones).
I dont think he games though -
I think the problem is that gamers are so fixated on graphics, and the graphics are generally faked by using artwork, rather than being rendered in real time, due to how slow (relative to what's needed for a game that's rendered in real time) today's processors are. This is why games keep getting larger in size, even though the amount of gameplay doesn't really change that much. Visual data in increasingly high detail is being shipped with the game, whereas if the games were just rendered in real time, the graphics could become better for a particular game just by using a better processor.
Perhaps if some graphic designers started contributing to open source, that problem would be solved. But they need Photoshop firstHowever, that problem has been eliminated recently, with Photoshop CS2, so maybe that will start changing. If that doesn't help either, then we'll just have to wait it out until companies start porting games to Linux or processors become good enough for real time rendering.

Now this is interesting, an actual ray traced game: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/06/16/014229&from=rss

I don't have Windows installed or the dough to buy the game so that's currently impossible. If you wanna buy me a windows machine so i can try it then maybe i will consider it.
-
I game...with an XBOX...thats why i have no need for windows...hehehe
-
In all seriousness, I just can't play any games other than racing games with a controller. FPSs/RTSs only work for me with a mouse.

i tried the link on the first page for instructions, are you referring to the persistent overlay? because i tried that at both ends of the slider and in the middle, still no luck. This program only has so many options :|
the thing i think i might be doing wrong is that i have the full fedora dvd image, is there a special one for this? -

Linux has Minesweeper...what more do you need?

wine is compatible with quite a gew games now. Starcraft works quite well on my distro.
