simple. id like to start using linux. no partitions. i have my main computer. and i have the little IBM.
id like to tinker and fiddle about. im more then competent and will follow directions religiously if needs be.
if it is possible. something i can get the hang of quickly. but at the same time fiddle about with and maybe tear my hair out over a little.
which distro should i go for? and is it compatible with the notebook i will be hoping to use it on? one last thing. will i be able to boot from a USB drive as this notebook does not have an optical drive?
thank you.

Ubuntu + Compiz Fusion, depending on your specs
You should be able to boot from disc by going to BIOS and checking out the settings there, with the drive connected. -

i'm using it now on a Kingston 2 GB usb flash drive -
I use Fedora at home and at work and I would recommend that over ubuntu. My only issue with ubuntu is the whole sudo deal, you have no real root user which I don't like. On the other hand ubuntu has an amazing community and really great forums. If you're not very proficient with Linux you should go with ubuntu since you can get most things sorted out very fast and easily on their forums.
Please let us know what your choice is and if you have any problems. -
Yes, a lot of Ubuntu documentation is available

the only problem is that i cant install the damn things....i can only install from USB drive..and im having problems..ive scoured and same result....it says it cant find kernel image. this comes up before anything. not even splash screen.
i can only do it through USB since the x31 doesn't come come with an optical drive.
im really stumped. -
Try this guide out... http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/01/01/usb-knoppix-510
and replace Knoppix with Ubuntu
I didn't have time to see if it works since I'm at work, but it should as I've done similar work. -
i just want to run Linux on this thing.
it just keeps saying cant find kernel image! any ideas as to what im doing wrong? should i mount or extract the IMAGE...or should i just leave it as it is. -
got it to work...gooot it to work...pretty pleased....
thanks so much guys.
