    Hey guys,
    I'm a linux newb and recently took the plunge by installing linux mint 8 on the asus 1201n. One major problem: my wireless isn't working at all.
    Here's my lspci -vvnn output, thought this might be helpful.

    I'm really new to linux and have found some threads about similar problems, but the solutions proposed were pretty difficult - please talk slowly ;). Thanks in advance!

    Alright... shall do my best for to assist. Who you really need is Allurgroceries... specializes in Linux on Asus.

    Anyway, can you get internet using an ethernet cable? If so then there should not be a major problem getting the wireless. Make sure your router is actually sending a signal, mine did not at first. My guess is you need to install madwifi or something like it. Give me a minute... I'll go find those old codes that I used.

    I'm getting connection through ethernet cable. Btw, am I missing something or does lspci not give any wifi apparatus?

    Hi!
    that info is just too long for me for the "first contact" :)
    post (if you will) :
    lspci
    dmesg | grep -i wifi
    dmesg | grep -i wireless

    then we'll see :)

    First off, welcome to the board, and Linux, (if it's your first time). Posting the text of your message using a bold font can be distracting, although I would assume that you did this in order to differentiate your message, from your lspci output. A much better way of doing this, is when making your forum post, you select the system information block of text, (lspci output), and then click the # button, (for CODE formatted text). It's much easier to read and this is how your lspci output looks when posted that way;

    Now, in terms of posting the problem along with system information in advance, posting the output of lspci is good, (not lspci -vvnn, unless asked), if your problem is related to hardware on the PCI bus. This would include display adapter, wired ethernet port, and most times, the wireless ethernet hardware, too. (Other good output commands to post are lsmod for system modules, and lsusb for USB devices).

    However, in trying to decode Linux driver issues with the Asus Eee PC 1201N, we have another problem. You correctly noted that the WiFi hardware is not listed in your lspci output, only the wired ethernet port, (Atheros AR8132). That usually means it's not turned on. You should check in the Advanced screen of your system BIOS and make sure that the Onboard WLAN is enabled. If it is, then when your computer boots up, you should make sure you hit the Function Key plus F2 key combination to turn on the WiFi. Now when you run the lspci command, you should see a new hardware listing that looks something like;
    Code:
    03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8171 (rev 01)
    The only problem is that it's not the Realtek 8171 WiFi chipset in the Eee PC 1201N, rather it's the Realtek 8191se chipset. Since the hardware is new, the module for it hasn't been incorporated into most Linux distribution's kernel version yet, so in order to use it under Linux, you'll need to download the source code for the driver, compile, and then install it in your system. Here's the actual step by step instructions, modified from this blog post;
    The WiFi issue, and more about running Linux on the Eee PC 1201N, is covered in this excellent article at Phoronix. Also check out the Ubuntu bug launchpad post about the Realtek WiFi driver. Finally you may also want to read this thread over at the Arch Linux forum, about running Linux on the Eee PC 1201N.

    Good Luck..

    No worries, your post was fine. I was just suggesting some things that would have made it a bit more readable, for future posts. I also edited my post to clean up the instructions, parsing them one at a time, and I also updated the link for downloading the latest Realtek driver. Let us know if it works, or if you get stuck anywhere.

    Good Luck..

    I tried dmesg | grep -i wifi and wireless as well, but it doesn't produce any output.
    The wifi indicator light is blue as well, so it should be turned on...
    Anyone know what's wrong here?

    Ok. Did you;

    1) Verify that you have working WiFi in your 1201 by using it under Windows?

    2) (After you boot Linux), turn on your WiFi with the Function key combination of FN + F2? You should try it by hitting FN+F2 together once, and then run lspci, and then do it again, to see which way toggles the WiFi on.

    Let us know if your WiFi hardware is present after trying that.

    Good Luck..

    You do need to see if you can get the WiFi hardware working under Windows. This is simply to verify that you have working WiFi hardware. If your WiFi hardware needs to be repaired/replaced they will test it under Windows anyway.

    You didn't say, but if you installed Mint on your entire HDD, (erasing your Windows installation), can you restore the Windows image from some kind of recovery CD? Or if you left the recovery partition when you installed Mint, then you should be able to access the recovery partition by hitting F9 when your 1201N boots, and restore the factory Windows installation image that way.

    So however you can accomplish it, should get Windows installed back on your 1201N and see if the WiFi works. If not, then the unit will likely have to be repaired..

    Good Luck..

    Ok Just and Update for the ones interested.

    got my 1201N 2 Days ago. Played around with it (Win7)

    Downloaded Ubuntu 10.4RC and Wireless works out the box.
    Looks like the Graphic works out of the Box too.
    But need to double check when the Updates are done.

    Yes it runs 1366x768 (16:9)

    The only problem i have is the whole system is acting up a lot. Mouse dont work half of the time.
    I hope the final will run stable....

    Well, as it turns out it was a hardware problem, so it wasn't linux' fault. My wireless adaptor was faulty and was sent back to asus.
