Just wondering if anybody else has installed Linux on their F3SV machine? Which distribution seems to work best with the hardware? Were there any driver issues that I should be aware of before installing?
My boyfriend recommended Suse 10 to me, which is probably what I'll be installing when the notebook arrives. I just wanted to see if anybody here has additional suggestions, or helpful experience to share.![]()

Suse is a good distro, but for those that are newer to linux -- I recommend installing Ubuntu/Kubuntu
Kubuntu is more like windows with a very sleek interface (KDE), and straight Ubuntu has the Gnome interface which is very easy to use, and easy to theme.
Another popular one is PCLinuxOS.
I'm getting my Asus u3s this Tuesday, and will be installing Ubuntu on it. -
The rule of thumb is that for Santa Rosa laptops, you will want to use relatively new distros. The recently released OpenSUSE 10.3 is supposed to be pretty good, assuming you get the KDE version - also, it is supposed to be friendly to new users.
Ubuntu is another newbe-friendly distro, as mentioned. In that case, you will want to get 7.10 "Gutsy" RC(release candidate) instead of old Feisty Fawn.
I wouldn't recommend PCLOS. It is getting too old for a Santa Rosa laptop. You will some tweaking to make it work on your laptop, and it doesn't worth it, IMO. -
i got fedora to work almost flawlessly on the f3sv (other than webcam and fingerprint reader, but thats not really important to me)
i would also recommend going with the new ubuntu release, the prereleases supported it pretty well, so the full release should support it near 100%
i would also recommend getting fedora 7, i can help you with any problems you encounter along the way hopefully. -
I strongly agree with the Kubuntu recommendation. The latest version is supposed to be among the most hardware aware distros available, and very easy to manage, not to mention the outstanding user community resources available. It deserves at least a real try.
Hope your having fun with your new notebook! -
check this out, i got ubuntu 7.10 to work really nicely on my notebook
