NOTE TO MODS: I am forced to bypass the language filter because it is lame (AS S = delete the space). This is legit -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubStation_Alpha#Advanced_SubStation_Alpha
Are there subtitles for that video? And have you built mplayer with AS S support? Try --disable-a ss to see if that helps... Going off of this for reference:
http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-users/2009-July/077443.html
This is a bit far out in terms of my comfort level with Mplayer, so I'll probably have to leave it there unless you can think of anything else... you should probably try putting together a bug report. -
YAY. after i disable subtitles i gain around 15 sec from last play so now i can play around 1 min and 15 sec
anyway its over 22 hour here so tomorow i wil fill a bug report. i was lucky i keep on another partition ubuntu 9.04 so i am not totally screwed up; i will wait until someone from ubuntu will patch this.
like i said before thx alot again for your time.
dirty fix/workaround
seems after i pass to mplayer -noass and i DON'T rewind or change fullscreen/windowed mplayer it's somehow stable (in a nutshell start movie fullscreen and enjoy the movie). i tested only a few minutes which is far more than my previous attempts
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Ah ok, at least it's making some sense. I must've gotten the option wrong (--disable-as s versus -noass). Thanks for following up!
-
I kinda need SubstationAlpha, because I watch a lot of japanese anime
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
I dunno you might try pulling the latest mplayer from svn -- but I'm not sure if the bug has been patched.
At least the problem has been isolated... just have to wait for a fix. -
Latest svn pull give a bit more skipping capabilities but still crashes when Substation Alpha is enabled
-
I compiled last svn build with option
./configure --enable-debug=3
with the intention to collect more data for reporting a bug. Unfortunately mplayer fails me.
No more crashes
Maybe i am just plain lucky but i will test more these days to find any more bugs (if any) in mplayer. -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Hey james-, finally found a bug report for that flickering problem with the NVIDIA card after upgrading to Jaunty:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/464591 -
Same here... no it doesn't want to crash with --enable-debug=3 going to configure without debug(might be more strict without) and try to compile again
---
Compiled without and doesn't seem to crash anymore -
After one day of testing various mkv's and avi's seems pretty stable now even if i compiled without debug option. I don't know what they fixed in the last svn but it's ok now.I tested on ubuntu 9.10 with default kernel 2.6.31-14-generic.
-
i upgraded to karmic from jaunty...it did not give me a new -generic kernel, instead i still just have the .31.5 as my default kernel
when booting up, i get the following message:
Unable to find a suitable fs in /proc/mounts, is it mounted? Use --subdomainfs to overide.
I don't suppose you know what that is all about, or what i should do?
thanks -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Sounds like /proc/mounts is messed up, you didn't paste it in so I have no ideas except:
http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtopic.php?pid=20376#p20376 -
i didn't paste it in as i'm not sure what i have to do to get info on 'fs' or '/proc/mounts' to then paste in... the warning just flashes up during boot up
EDIT: i decided to just do a clean install of karmic, and i guess that got rid of the problem -
I've had that for a while now... dunno what it is..
/proc/mounts
fdisk -lCode:rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0 none /sys sysfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0 none /proc proc rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0 udev /dev tmpfs rw,relatime,mode=755 0 0 /dev/disk/by-uuid/5457a33f-656e-4d57-8c77-8de798b08ec8 / ext4 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 none /sys/kernel/security securityfs rw,relatime 0 0 debugfs /var/lib/sreadahead/debugfs debugfs rw,relatime 0 0 none /sys/fs/fuse/connections fusectl rw,relatime 0 0 none /sys/kernel/debug debugfs rw,relatime 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620 0 0 none /dev/shm tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime 0 0 none /var/run tmpfs rw,nosuid,relatime,mode=755 0 0 none /var/lock tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0 none /lib/init/rw tmpfs rw,nosuid,relatime,mode=755 0 0 /dev/sda7 /home ext4 rw,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 binfmt_misc /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime 0 0 gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/james/.gvfs fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=1000 0 0
ps I only have windows for the color calibration software
-
after the clean install, i then built the .31.5 kernel, and then again i get the warning... also, once it boots up, a box pops up complaining about frequency scaling (which now comes standard with karmic)..not sure whether or not that's related to the warning

A major announcement!
The N10 Linux HOWTO has been moved to wiki format, I've created the page here:
http://n10.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_HOWTO
The idea is to use this thread for discussion and hand over the actual guide to be edited by everyone as a wiki article.
I'll make links for the first post to the new wiki sections, and then the first post will no longer be updated.
For now, the howto will continue to be mirrored at allurgroceries.com/n10 but I will pull from the wiki instead of my first post on this thread. -
Sounds like a good idea seeing as its getting quite long
btw 31.6 is out -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
OK I will update the guide for 31.6 as soon as I can, I've actually just gotten my N10 back from loaning it.
When I do the next update for 31.6, I will also move the guide off of the first post and link to the new sections on the wiki.
Edit: Final update to the first post (unless I need to link to something or move the wiki).
Updated the howto for 2.6.31.6. -
This happens when I complete the first part of the Dual GPU setup except my screen starts flashing and becomes semi-unresponsive. Any ideas?

If it's similar to what's been discussed in the thread, check out page 68 with james- posts, (this one too) and there is a launchpad bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/464591. You can try renaming or deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf. -
I don't think this helps too much here since I did a clean install (I had previously ran Windows 7 on this)
It's at
that I get issues. Mainly because there is no xorg.conf to move. Even after i download the xorg.confs for NVIDIA and Intel graphics and complete the rest of the steps I get to the reboot with NVIDIA graphics and get the blinking screen of doom, everytime. It's occurred 3 times since a clean install and I have no idea why it's doing this.Code:sudo mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.old
Also, it appears that my startup scripts don't work either, but that shall have to wait until this problem is resolved. -
The HDMI sound isn't working, it shows up in the list but with mplayer even with
it doesn't give me an error per say but doesn't play any sound. I've tested my setup(hdmi->av receiver->tv) and I switched it to laptop->tv, tried it with my PS3 and the sound works through the hdmi(so it's not the cable)Code:mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0.3 file.avi
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Can you boot with Intel graphics? Try removing the xorg.conf.nvidia entirely or blanking the file, since that is probably where the problem is. For instance, move the existing one to a backup location and then try restarting X:
The actual /etc/X11/xorg.conf will be a symbolic link, you can see where it points with:Code:sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia /etc/X11/xorg.conf.nvidia.bak sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
If it's pointing to a blank (or non-existant) xorg.conf file, that should make it autoprobe for everything and hopefully it will not give you a blinking screen.Code:ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf
#0 make sure IEC958 is switched on in your mixer.
#1 plug in cable and turn on receiver/TV/amp, etc
#2 run sudo nvidia-settings and detect displays
#3 run mplayer command line, or create/overwrite .asoundrc so that all apps default to hdmi out:
rm .asoundrc when you're done using HDMI.Code:echo 'pcm.!default hdmi:Intel' > ~/.asoundrc
-
when I use alsamixer, I don't see "IEC958" but I see it in the GUI sound preferences(gnome) in the profiles. How do I switch it on? In alsamixer I have Master,Headphones,PCM,Mic, S/PDIF, S/PDIF D, S/PDIF 1, Beep, F-Mic, Speaker
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Sound prefs in Gnome should do it. If you're still having problems rebuild alsa from source... it works perfectly for me.
-
Fixed the problem. You above instructions solved it perfectly. Thanks. I'd rep you but I think I've done that too much already
.

Cool, well that means I should probably add this detail into the guide on my next revision. Thanks for following up!
Edit: I've now corrected all of the missing links and minor problems with the wiki. If anyone finds a problem please let me know or just edit it (it is a wiki!). Again the new URL of the guide is: http://n10.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_HOWTO -
If you mean switching the profile to IEC and clicking "mute" to uncheck it, and boost the volume up to 100% and trying, that is what I've been doing(then swtiching it to the HDMI profile. I've compiled alsa from source(again b4 I posted) and still no sound... it's weird
-
Could any one tell me please how to get manual control on leds( like wi-fi and bluetooth leds)?
Is there any easy way to do it?
Looks like /sys/class/leds/ can help - but it's empty.
kernel 2.6.29.1
There is no any other problems with asus_laptop, except "power button" - magnify works well. -
I've looked through asus-laptop.c and found that "WLED and BLED are not handled like other XLED"
Anyway is there any other way to control them?
P.S problem with "power button" was solved, in 2.6.29.1 it has different name. -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
What kind of device are you trying to go into? If it's a TV, and you only want sound, make sure to set up the TV as a dual display and hit apply, then go back and disable it. The sound will only work out of a TV if it's set up that way, at least AFAIK. If it's not a display, like a receiver or an amp, clicking on detect displays should be good enough.
When I plug into a TV over HDMI, to get sound out of it I have to enable it first as a dualview and then the sound will work.
If none of this helps it could be a problem with PulseAudio -- I don't know because I don't run it.
You can control the wlan and bluetooth via:
/sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/bluetooth
/sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/wlan
For me, wlan only controls the LED but if I send 0 to bluetooth it disables bluetooth, not just the LED. -
Thanks - wled is enough for me.
-
Ok I FINALLY got my audio working
!!
I ran
then ran alsamixergui I manually clicked the speakers above all three IEC958Code:sudo apt-get install alsamixergui
to test I ran gstreamer-properties (pulseaudio, with default device) and clicked test to get that *BEEEEEEEEP* then in sound prefs I switched to HDMI(either or works
)
*EDIT*
You can also do the same thing with alsamixer by selecting the SPDIF cards and pressing "." or "," so the MM become "00" -

2.6.32 should be out this coming week (or next week if there is an rc9).
Here is my rc8 config:
(Edit 2: link removed)
The most notable change is the new Atom CPU family type (CONFIG_MATOM):
Edit: 2.6.32-rc8 has turned out to be remarkably solid. I'd definitely advise the upgrade for anyone willing to spare an hour and 20 minutes.
Edit 2: Updated howto for 2.6.32.
Edit 3: That will be my final update. I've sold my N10J.
Thanks to everyone on this thread and n10user.com, it's been a good time.
Please keep the wiki article alive!
-
Hate to see ya leave
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
I'll still be watching this thread and the HOWTO wiki
I will surely miss the N10J, but all good things must come to an end.
Plus I have too many toys. At one point it was a crucial tool for me, since I was doing a lot of on-site IT work, but lately I've been doing more web programming and less IT so I haven't been using it. The 2.6.32 release coincided beautifully, and is a rock solid setup so I feel that I can leave on a good note with regard to the HOWTO.
I will try and answer questions as best I can, but keep in mind I don't have the hardware to test it on anymore.
If someone wants to take over the kernel config, please speak up. I hope there is another experienced user out there who can take care of this since 2.6.32 won't be current forever.
Cheers! -
I don't mind checking the kernel, I mean I've been in this thread a while
anyways alsa doesn't compile under 2.6.32 it returns error code 2, i'm going to look into this and update the wiki if I find a solution
*EDIT*
I go it to compile using the alsa snapshot for the driver, I'll update the wiki to reflect this as soon as I can -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Nice, thanks for that. I left a note about CONCURRENCY_LEVEL on the talk page, I'd run time on it to be sure.
-
I see that it improves I/O but reduces calculation/compiling I put it back to 2 seeing as it's shorter..dunno what that would be useful for though...unless you are constantly contacting kernel
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
I see... thanks for verifying that. I made a script to kill alot of resource heavy daemons that let me compile the kernel in an hr and 20 mins... I can probably recreate it and throw it on the wiki. This assumes of course that you arent using the machine during the compilation.
-
-----double post......
-
would be good to have something to speed it up, then again I could always compile on my quad..but i'm too lazy
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Quick update... james- updated the guide for 2.6.32.1 (please give rep to him
), and the kernel config file has been relocated from allurgroceries.com to pastebin.
-
Meh it wasn't much you did most of the work by cleaning out the kernel
-
Updated kernel to 2.6.31.2
*EDIT*
Also added GRUB2 and tty resolution optimization -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Nice, here's that script that should let you compile in just under an hour and 30 mins....
Basically just kill anything that's running that isn't needed, get out of gdm, and let er rip.Code:#!/bin/sh /etc/init.d/network-manager stop /etc/init.d/networking stop /etc/init.d/samba stop /etc/init.d/ssh stop /etc/init.d/nfs-common stop /etc/init.d/preload stop /etc/init.d/gdm stop
-
hmm seems alsa is out with .22, i'll be working on this in my spare time to check if it's compatible with HDMI without patch
*EDIT*
alsa's new version still needs the patch and it compiles the same as the previous versions, I'll update the guide later today -
I've updated the wiki:
Kernel: 2.6.32.3
Alsa: 1.0.22.1
added a new tweak: dyson audio compression -
Just wondering how to change the bootsplash & console on the custom kernel so that the aspect ratio matches the screen. Can anyone help?
EDIT: Never mind. Loaded up the tutorial on the net instead on my computer. Fixed the console.
Still need the bootsplash fix.
