I think your video plays with the Intel card now because the -vo x11 option doesn't use hardware acceleration, see the mplayer manual for details:

wow linus is pretty fast on the revision numbers... 2.6.29 stable release O_O

ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yeah I'll have a config up for .29 soon, haven't had time yet.
Edit: My kernel config for 2.6.29 is up, see page 1. -
I have another hint for the FP.
Rename /etc/udev/rules.d/50-libfprint0.rules to 91-libfprint0.rules (I dont know why)
And add these 2 lines:
# Device upek
ATTRS{idVendor}=="147e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1000", MODE="0664", GROUP="plugdev"
This makes the screen-saver unlock running.
I would write howto the way to follow the pdf, --with-upec and this change.
That should be all needed to make it work completely. -
And for sound I recomend use ALSA=
System->Preferences-Sound->ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
everywhere and HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) Master
Autodetect was OOS = pain in the .
Any suggestions here?
EDIT: This is all wrong.
I will explain it tommorow. -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Thanks for the tip for the FP reader... for the audio, you'll want it set to ALSA in most cases, since OSS is rarely used by current applications. I'm not sure if that answers your question.
-
I am still dissatisfied with my sound.
Always after a while (screen-saver?) I gets just messed.
Vlc for example sais:
ALSA lib pcm_pulse.c:625pulse_prepare) PulseAudio: Unable to create stream: Invalid argument
ALSA lib pcm_pulse.c:625pulse_prepare) PulseAudio: Unable to create stream: Invalid argument
[00000457] alsa audio output error: unable to commit hardware configuration (Input/output error)
[00000457] oss audio output error: cannot open audio device (/dev/dsp)
And only restart helps me to hear sound, but after a while the same.
I hope ALSA will solve it but it did not:/
I will have look what it sais when it works. -

I'm sure that has been mentioned somewhere else in the thread, and equally sure that I did something wrong initially, but I no longer get the nasty NVIDIA errors when gdm starts - fantastic. Thanks again for the guide.

Here's a thread regarding NVIDIA Hybrid SLI and HybridPower on Linux:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=127097
It links to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/312756
If anyone has further info please post it. -
As mentioned before I had problems with sound and I got used to that ALSA is the right way. In Gnome it is not true! The right way is PulseAudio which howto is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578
I was a little surpriced becouse I know KDE and there was a sound server called ARTS and it has been abandoned as a wrong way.
But Gnome adopted the sound server way.
The point is after following the howto my half working sound now works properly. So remember if you have to choose between Alsa and PulseAudio, in Gnome you want the second one. -
Hi there again,
For the last 2 days I've been trying to figure out how to play sound over my n10j's hdmi port.
No luck.
I tried to follow directions in many forums, including:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=116286
http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=185519&page=3
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1095223
Basically they're all saying same thing. Upgade alsa to 1.0.19 and it should work. Well it doesn't for me. My aplay -l still shows:
Code:card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC662 Analog [ALC662 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC662 Digital [ALC662 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
PLZ HELP!

You should have snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi in the output of lsmod
-
I've tried before and it wan never there. Forcing it to load did not help.
Ok. Maybe you can help me with the bug then?
I can see two patch_nvhdmi.c files in alsa-driver package. One is included into another:
Code:root@dragilla:/temp/alsa# find . -name patch_nvhdmi.c ./alsa-driver-1.0.19/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c ./alsa-driver-1.0.19/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c
Code:root@dragilla:/temp/alsa# cat alsa-driver-1.0.19/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c #define __NO_VERSION__ #include "adriver.h" #include "../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c"

ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
It's in alsa-driver-1.0.19/sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c
-
Doesn't help at all
The module snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi doesn't load automatically and when I modprobe it it's there, but it doesn't change anything - still no hdmi device under aplay -l.
Tried to ./configure alsa-driver with no options and with ./configure --with-cards=all --with-card-options=all. Makes no difference.
Maybe it's some module options? I don't use any atm. Tell me your settings please.
edit: or maybe I'm not installing the driver properly. Is there a way to check what driver version is loaded?

You can check your driver version with:
Code:cat /proc/asound/version
Does this command return an error?
Code:head /proc/asound/card0/codec#2
Code:modprobe snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi
-
Code:
root@dragilla:/home/luke# head /proc/asound/card0/codec#2 Codec: Nvidia ID 3 Address: 2 Vendor Id: 0x10de0003 Subsystem Id: 0x10de0101 Revision Id: 0x100000 No Modem Function Group found Default PCM: rates [0x0]: bits [0x0]: formats [0x0]:
ps: the driver is properly installed (compilation date and version are fine).
ps2: i'm on jaunty and kernel 2.6.29-rc8.
ps3: maybe it's something in xorg.conf? Or it has nothing to do with it? (video over hdmi is fine, i'm on 180.41 nv driver)

OK this should do it...
After you confirm this works, I am going to add this to the howto...
Edit: Merged NVIDIA HDMI audio info into main howto on page 1. -
Well it works in a sense that I can now see the device (aplay -l), but no sound is coming out of it. No matter where I choose to use it: audacious, mplayer or "Sound Preferences".
Will play with asound.conf for a while now.
thanx!
edit: Actually the audacious (music player) don't wanna start playing when the (0,3) device is selected in config. The time just doesn't start to flow. Dunno what's happening
Basic asound.conf files I don't help solve it.

Make sure on your mixer (like gnome-volume-control) the IEC958 switch is on.
You can try this to see if sound works at all thru HDMI:
Code:aplay -d hw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/generic.wav
-
Tried both TV and amplituner. Amplituner recognizes hdmi connected... but then it did recognize it even before I upgraded to 1.0.19.

ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
If you go to sound preferences and switch sound playback to NVIDIA HDMI and click test does it make any sound?
-
ps: theoretically it's possible that the hdmi port in amplituner is broken (tho it's brand new and radio and other stuff work great), but the tv is fine I'm sure, because I have other hdmi device connected to it and it plays sound.
ps2: what's wierd also... the gnome mixer lacks some rulers now. Don't know when it dispeared. Before it had adjusment of front/rear/LFE or something (in hda intel). Now it only got Master/PCM/mic/f-mic/speaker + switches and recording.
ps3: also the "aplay -L" is changed now:
Code:default:CARD=Intel HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog Default Audio Device front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog Front speakers surround40:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog 4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers surround41:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog 4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround50:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog 5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers surround51:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog 5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround71:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Analog 7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, ALC662 Digital IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output hdmi:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 HDA Intel, NVIDIA HDMI HDMI Audio Output null Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Christ! It plays... But noone told me I had to run NVidia X Server Settings, Detect Display and enable it (TV/ampli). I thought X was a separate thing. Is this is the way it's suppose to be? This is the way you have it? If so, then sorry I wasted your time mate, I'm and idiot.
Thanx sooo much for your time.

Great guide!
Couple of questions:
1. Has anyone tried to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the N10? Apparently it is optimized for the Atom processor; I use Mixxx currently on Ubuntu Studio on my N10, so I want the most out of the processor; it runs fairly well, though I do have to mess with the settings in Mixxx.
2. Speaking of Mixxx, a low-latency kernel to improve its performance would be really nice. Would that even be possible with the Atom? -
Code:cat /boot/config-`uname -r` | grep PREEMPT
Code:# CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU is not set # CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU_TRACE is not set # CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE is not set # CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY is not set CONFIG_PREEMPT=y CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT=y # CONFIG_PREEMPT_TRACER is not set

Dragilla, I just assumed you were hooking it up to your TV.. I guess if you're going to a receiver with HDMI you'd need to fire up nvidia-settings anyway even thought it seems counterintuitive.... glad it's working! I'll merge all that info into the howto sometime soon.
HexInfinity, welcome to the forum! I haven't tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but I'm definitely curious about it too. I've played around with a few softsynths and samplers on my N10 and they run pretty well given how little power the Atom has. Not sure it'd be up to task for a DJ set.. but definitely worth playing with, let us know how it works out if you try it!
Edit: NVIDIA 180.44 stable was released today. Updated howto (and detectgpu script) for NVIDIA 185.13, the current beta release.
If you are going to upgrade NVIDIA using the dual graphics setup, remember to use the first update-rc.d command to remove the existing script, edit the script for 185.13, update-rc.d to add the script back. Also copy back the two files from ~/intel. -
Hello again,
I made a little research in the topic of 7.1 sound in linux. I'm confused now because I'm not even sure anymore if it's even possible. I have some Dolby truehd, pcm 7.1 and dts-hd tracks I'd love to play on my n10j over hdmi to my receiver. dts-hd ma would also be nice, although I don't have any tracks in master audio yet. Anyways maybe you know something for sure?

NVIDIA's HDMI driver will only do stereo, surround might work out of the optical output, but I only know of 5.1 not 7.1, so let us know what you find...

I don't have any HDMI gear to test with, that is the problem... (edit: or 7 speakers and a sub, heh)... AFAIK the HDMI out only supports stereo, am I wrong?
-
I'm just watching a movie and the sound is dts. The only two cables sticking out of my laptop are power and hdmi
The trick is -afm hwac3 and -ao alsa:device=hw=0.3. It says it outputs sound thrugh spdif but the device is hdmi, so the sound goes through hdmi. And yes I'm sure it's 5.1. I wish it was 7.1 but mplayer only supports up to 6 channels (in -channles).

I apologize if this has been covered in this thread before, but my search has not found anything and I do not have the time to read the whole thread.
A big deal has been made out of the ASUS N10J's ability to actually decode and play 1080p HD videos because of the GeForce graphics card. However, I also read that this is due to DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration), which allows Windows to offload the decoding to the graphics card.
Does this mean that if I run Linux on the N10J, I will lose the ability to decode 1080p material? The assumption would be that DirectX is Windows-only and nVidia protects its PureVideoHD technology, so Linux users are left with nothing. But rather than assume, I would like to have this verified by someone who has actually tried it.
- Can the N10J decode and play 1080p .mkv files without stutters, jitters, dropped frames, etc. under Linux?
- How about 720p?
- And how does displaying it on the N10J's native screen (1024x600, i.e. downscaling for 1080p) vs. displaying it on an external "1080p" screen (1920x1200, i.e. upscaling for 720p) compare?
Thanks a lot for any info you can provide.

See the howto on page 1 under Section 3 "HD video decoding" (near the bottom of the first post of this thread)... you just need an app like MPlayer that supports VDPAU, and it runs well. To play it you need to specify an argument from the command line, like mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau filename
See the MPlayer manual (the part for the vdpau option) for the other command-line options for other codecs. -

Funny, I had this problem too (I haven't used compiz in a while and it gave me the same error when I tried it), until I reinstalled it with aptitude. At least it's not a problem with the drivers, everything is OK for me now too.
Edit: Updated howto for kernel 2.6.29.1. I also uploaded a new version of the detectgpu script that will never need to be updated so long as the NVIDIA drivers have the version number 1xx.xx -

Hm, do you know a way to make alsa see 8-channels?
I mean in alsamixer there is this position called "channel mode" and you can only select between 2 and 6. I know that on other 8ch cards there's also a choice of 8ch.
I need it because I have a sample file with lpcm 7.1, which is correctly decoded by ffmpeg and would be nicely send to my receiver over hdmi but alsa replies that 8channels is unsupported and it's sent as 2ch pcm
Hope you can help
