Given that OpenSUSE doesn't work on my desktop, I ordered an Ubuntu Live CD and tried it on my laptop. The internet doesn't work on it either; doesn that mean it wouldn't work if I installed it fully? Thanks for the help!

I have a wireless network with using a wireless card in the PMCIA slot. I was just wondering if it always doesn't work on the Live CD and it would work if I downloaded the OS. I just don't want to waste the time loading it onto my computer if I can get online. Thanks!

If it's gonna work OTB, you should be able to set it up while using the Live CD....you should post what wireless card you have. I take it a broadcom?

It's a TrendNet Wireless CardBus Adapter, TEW-221PC. IEE 802.11B. I also have a Belkin adapter that I tried and doesn't work.

I would recommend you try SimplyMEPIS_6.5, if you can get one. Or Ubunty Feisty Fawn (7.04). I tried that before and they both work, and when I try &.10, it didn't. Although, I actually have integrated wireless, not PC Card.

Yeah, the Ubuntu CD I have is Fiesty Fawn. I ordered it a little bit before Gutsy Gibbon came out. I wish I could get internet to work on Linux, then maybe I'd try and see how it's like using it everyday.

Ok, thanks for the advice guys. That means though that I can't get Ubuntu to work right? That's too bad, I really wanted to try it. :(

Your wireless (or wired network port), or any other piece of hardware NOT working under a Live CD does not mean it will NOT work under a full installation of the same distribution. As a matter of fact it's usually the opposite. You can't get your hardware to work under the LiveCD, but when you install the distribution you find a Linux driver for your hardware, and you find a way to install it. This is especially true of networking hardware. It just might take a little bit of digging, and a little bit of reading.

    Like this..

    and this..

    or more directly, this..

I know, but I tried the LiveCD of that but it doesn't configure wireless out of the box. I've googled and have seen at least one more user who was "wondering" why Ubuntu break the "perfect" Feisty Fawn with Gutsy.

Like jas said, if you really want to use a distro, just take a step down the food chain and cable connect so you can download the proper driver. Ubuntu is a great distribution....I've quit booting to my Vista partition because of it (except to launch a game).

Thanks for the help jas! I looked at some of the links, looks like maybe I'll need to turn off WEP on my network since one of them says you can't have WEP working with the card. To theZoid, I'd do that it's all setup as an wireless network. I'd like it on my desktop espessially but it's too far to have a wired setup from my router. I've tried the Live CD on my desktop as well and it looks like it's about to connect (one of the dots on the connector indicator turned green) but the other one doesn't. Then after that all it does is go to the area where I enter the WEP encryption key. I'd like to get Ubuntu working on at least one of my computers...I'm determined. ;) i

Why don't you try Fedora Core? There are a few really command-by-command instruction on how to get the wireless working. A simple search at a few places like fedorafaq.org among them would give the solution.

I downloaded Ubuntu onto my desktop's hard drive and according to the Ubuntu website, the USB Wireless I have in it should work. However, it doesn't. It says for Gutsy Gibbon though and the Live CD I had was Feisty Fawn. I wonder if they added support for the USB Wireless in Gutsy Gibbon?

I've still been trying to get this to work on my computer. Linux is such a huge pain! lol I've always wanted to try it but I never can get wireless to work. I currently have Feisty Fawn installed but wireless doesn't work. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Feisty Fawn? Download the Ubuntu 8.04, it was released to today and THEN tell us if your wireless doesn't work. Get a current release man.

I think I ruined my entire computer! I tried updating with CD then restart and GRUB (my default bootloader after loading Ubuntu) says it's starting then "Error 22"!! No Windows or anything. I can't boot whatsover!

How do I do that? I have a Mandriva LIve CD that I burned a while ago. I just stuck it in my computer so I could use it. I used the drive lookup deal in Mandriva and I see my Windows partition. Ubuntu is gone somehow, but that's OK I just want to boot into Windows. I don't know what to do now though... :(

There boot loaders that you can install that will boot your OSes, or you can try repairing windows....
