I'm looking for a sub $200 laptop that will work perfectly for linux.
I was looking at the Thinkpad T40, any comments on linux compatibility?

Less than 200 samolians? Wow, that must have a "squirrel inside" sticker on it.....lol
I thought the eeePC was what you were looking at? -
Ya, but I don't have the cash and want something larger.
-
j/k...I understand....I'll take a looksie as my daughter needs a new laptop too
-
Ya, the EeePc is crap if you compare it to the T40, when the T40 is much faster and probably cheaper.
And will last longer
-
How about this?
It is something "larger" but maybe it won't be in your price range... seeing as it is an antiquity now. (I've used one of those briefly as a kid. That was considered "portable" back then.) -
you should be able to find a t40 for around $200. even an ugly one under $200. it has better specs than my vaio which currently runs like a champ with linux. i guess i should go ahead and put it on ebay.

Ha! That's the one with "Squirrel Inside"....a friend had one of those in the 80's....couldn't believe how far ahead of the curve he was.....he used to sit it on the conference table and run 'what if' scenarios and wow the heck out of the sales managers....LOL

Hmm I just sold a T42p for $225 a few months ago. Doesn't help you much now though.

Compaq luggables. my first two computers were luggables. The first has a 8088, and the second, which i used more has a 8mhz 286 (upgraded from a 6mhz), 640kb ram, 2 360kb 5.25 drives and i even put a hard card in it for 20Mb of hard drive space (picture of a hard card below). it ran DOS 3.3, upgraded to 5.0, then finally 6.22.

she was a dream. and i still have her too. didnt boot last time i tried tho.
sorry to hijack, but the T40 is probably a very good choice. I remember when it came out, it was a very kick butt notebook. -
Jeezus, I'd forgotten all about the 8088....isn't that what the XT's used?
Looking for a laptop as a linux companion, ideas?
