I've been getting a lot of crashes so far in 7.10. Trying to 'save as' on a picture would sometimes make firefox crash. A few other annoying random crashes would happen, like when installing themes by the button, not dragging.

I know its in a beta stage so far, but is it normal for this to be happening when its 10 days or so from the final release? Being so close to the final release has me wondering if they'll get it all ironed out by the time it's out. I have all the updates except for one that would give me an error every time I tried to install it. The package had something to do with printers so I believe it isn't important.

Other then the crashes everything pretty much works fine; Compiz Fusion is working after using a work around on Thinkwiki for my graphics. I found it a bit odd that they didn't have the gnome compiz manager package installed by default though.

I have been reporting the crashes, just in case anyone was wondering.

One more thing, I wish they would have built in support for track point ultranav scrolling. The Thinkwiki work around seems a bit sketchy to me (I'm actually lost in trying to implement it). Since they say they have high support for Thinkpads it makes me wonder why they overlooked this feature.

Yes, you should expect crashes. If you can't stand for beta testing, go back to 7.04 which I did.

I use Linux, not testing Linux, and I am not an expert to test beta version. So, let experts to worry about beta versions.

I really don't mind the crashing to much, just had me wondering if its normal at the late stage the distro is in. I'd rather put up with the crashes then trying to get the work arounds to work on my newer hardware (my wifi card doesn't work in 7.04 and opengl didn't work for my video card either).

Its pretty easy for you to stick with older versions but for some of us with newer hardware its best to try out the betas.

There will still be bugs due to it being a beta. There is trouble with freezes/crashes with the restricted nvidia driver for me but it's not this in your case. If you haven't already have a look in the gutsy section on the site below to see if anyone else is having the same problems:

    http://www.ubuntuforums.org

Also maybe try doing a reinstall if it still continues just in case it was a bodgy install causing it but for now your doing the right thing reporting it and maybe just wait and see if the bug is confirmed and fixed.

less than 1 month to release and there is still crashing bugs ?

I am wondering what would people say if this is not ubuntu but Vista.

It doesn't really matter when the release date is, what matters is how stable the release is. A beta release is for testing and to find bugs like this so they can be fixed.

As for vista, I still consider it a beta :D

Of course it matters. At such a late stage, I would expect it to be almost crash free, not something as mentioned which is anything but stable from the description of the problem.

But then, I am never a believer in ubuntu's philosophy of 6 months release cycle. There is simply not enough time to test things out.

It's up to the ubuntu team, if it isn't stable they can delay the release date if they want. I think for now we need to report any bugs that are found and just wait for the release and see what it's like. If the release is not stable I'll blow away the ubuntu partition and use something else.

Don't get me wrong on ubuntu though, I wouldn't touch it (or linux in any of its flavours) for mission critical server use.

Are you reporting the bugs and crashes to Launchpad? My A130 Toshiba had no sound, burner didn't work, and the card reader wasn't recognized with Feisty when it was released. Now everything works fine, and I was emailed when the bug tracker was updated so I had the fix as soon as it was available.

You don't pay for the OS so that is a great way to give back to the community.

I've got the gutsy beta running on a desktop. I've not run into any problems but I know laptops are a whole different ballgame. That's why I've not upgraded yet.
