I'm diving in to the Linux scene for the first time with Ubuntu 7.10. I'll be installing it pretty soon here, and I was wondering if there are any programs to make Ubuntu look more like OSX? Namely, I'm looking for a good recreation of the OSX dock.

Also, while I have your attention, could you give me a heads up if you recognize any potential problems I might have with the following set up?

    Dell E1505
    1.83 Core Duo
    ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    Ricoh SD Slot
    Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
iPod touch (ability to sync is important)

Finally, what's this I hear about Compiz Fusion? Where can I grab that?

Compiz Fusion comes with 7.10. After installing your drivers in the Restricted Drivers section (if it needs it), you can enable more options by installing compiz-settings-manager.

Wow, this Rocket Dock program is great! I've got it running in Vista right now. I take it that it'll install fine on Linux then, too?

Wait, so how do I get RocketDock to install in Ubuntu? I just got version 1.3.5 from the RD webpage, but it says it's for Windows XP/Vista and won't install in Linux. Where should I get the program from?

EDIT: Ok, a few more things. I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI X1400 video card and rebooted, and it says they're in use. Great. But when I go to the Visual Settings, I can't choose any of the higher level effects as it tells me "The composite extension is not available." How can I get that to work then? Also, I'm stuck in 1280x1040, but my screen can do 1600x1240, how can I get that resolution bumped up? Finally, how to I go about installing compiz-settings-manager (or where do I find it)? Thanks everyone.

Alright, last thing for now. I've got four partitions on my hard drive and they all seem to want to mount on my desktop in Ubuntu. Is there any way I can select some to permanently hide?

In gconf-editor goto apps>nautilus>desktop and uncheck Volumes Visible.

If your ATI drivers are properly downloaded and installed, edit "modes" in etc/X11/xorg.conf by adding 1600x1240 at the beginning of the list of available resolutions. IIRC, that's how I finally resolved the ATI resolution issue on my machine. Good luck.

Edit: Am using Suse at the moment, so if memory serves correctly, for Compiz Settings Manager in Ubuntu, go to Applications - Add/Remove, do a search for the app, then just click on it when it's found and follow the install instructions.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed in Ubuntu right now since I really don't understand a word of what you guys are saying. What are the basic steps I need to take to do the things that have been suggested in this thread? How do I (step-by-step, newbie friendly) install Rocket Dock, change the resolution, enable visual effects, etc? I should only need to be told this once, and after that I'll catch on, but I don't have any background in Linux, so knowing where to start has been tough for me. Thanks for the patience.

Yeah, AWN (Avant Window Navigator) through the package manager...but will take some tweaking from my experience.

EDIT: I use Rocket Dock in Vista, love it.

Go to Add/Remove in the Applications menu. Make sure the drop-down menu on the top right is set to "All available applications," and then type "compiz" into the search box. You should come up with "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm)". Check that and select "Apply". It will download and install (if you have an Internet connection).

Edit: I just got it working myself! Wicked sick!!!! :D :D :D :D
