I've switched to Chromium on most of my computers now, and the missing functionality of middle clicking after selecting the text of a (non-hyperlinked) URL to navigate irritated me to no end.
I frequently find text-only URLs (on mailing lists, for example) that I want to immediately navigate to, and double clicking the text and then clicking the 3rd/middle button gets me there fast. I've done it for so long that it's muscle memory.
This is standard behavior (except in Ubuntu based versions) in Firefox. After some searching, I found this little-known extension called Navigate on Paste. It only works on Linux.

If you use Firefox on an Ubuntu or Ubuntu-derivative, you can enable this functionality by going to about:config and setting middlemouse.contentLoadURL true.

Step 1: install the extension from here.
Step 2: Reload this page (so that the newly installed extension takes effect).
Step 3: Double click this url:
kernel.org
Step 4: Click the middle mouse button, or both mouse buttons at the same time if using a touchpad. On a mac running linux tap two or three fingers (depending on your configuration).
