Hey, i am using uBuntu 10.10 on HP pavilion DV6Z
i am actually a very very new Linux user, infact just started today
so i close my laptop lid like usual thinking that it would wake up when i open the lid back
but no, the screen stays black, and laptop is running
so any ideas on how to wake this thing up without the last resort which is hard restart

Does your fan spin up and do the status LEDs go back to normal?
Does a CTRL+ALT+F1 bring back your screen after resume?
If it's only your screen not coming back on there are a few options. These will involve running sudo pm-suspend --quirk-whatever where the quirk can be found in the pm-suspend manpage. -
Did you mkae sure you moved the mouse and all? It locks the screen.

I have a very similiar problem in 10.04, except all of my USB ports go dead. As soon as I close the lid again, they come back. Open the lid, they go dead again. The only way I can shutdown is by pressing the power button.
I discovered it's some kind of problem with hibernate. If I just let my notebook sleep it's ok. Maybe that could be your problem too? -

If the OP is using fglrx there's a chance that driver is causing a problem with resume. It could be anything at this point, hard to tell without more info.
My Ubuntu laptop won?t wake up after I close the lid. How do I fix that?
