Does your fan spin up and do the status LEDs go back to normal?

Does a CTRL+ALT+F1 bring back your screen after resume?

If it's only your screen not coming back on there are a few options. These will involve running sudo pm-suspend --quirk-whatever where the quirk can be found in the pm-suspend manpage.

I have a very similiar problem in 10.04, except all of my USB ports go dead. As soon as I close the lid again, they come back. Open the lid, they go dead again. The only way I can shutdown is by pressing the power button.
I discovered it's some kind of problem with hibernate. If I just let my notebook sleep it's ok. Maybe that could be your problem too?

If the OP is using fglrx there's a chance that driver is causing a problem with resume. It could be anything at this point, hard to tell without more info.
