I want to switch over 100% from Microsift OS to Ubuntu and I have everything working well except one item - KWorld ATSC UB-435Q USB stick
I tried googling but didn't find any solution. Any solution would be very much appreciated. I installed the multimedia package and associated files no problem and that's about my level of competency with Linux OS. Thanks

One thing you have to make sure that it is compatible, sure, there is proprietary drivers available, but some may not work as well. For example, I found a driver that worked for my wireless card, but would keep freezing my laptop.
When the stick is plugged into your computer, go to System>Preferences>Synaptic Package Manager (I think... I haven't booted into Ubuntu for a while, unfortunately)
If there is a driver in there, take a screenshot and post it here, and we'll take a look at it. -
Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's good driver support for it. The LinuxTV wiki has it currently listed under experimental support, but if you go to the wiki page for the UB435-Q, it states that it isn't currently supported, but that there are reports some people have it working under Linux. There is also this thread from the Linux media mailing list, regarding providing support for it last year, but the consensus reached was that it wasn't very reliable hardware to begin with.
I really hate to suggest this, but you may want to consider another USB ATSC tuner. Perhaps one from the LinuxTV wiki supported list. Like the Hauppauge, WinTV-HVR-950Q. It looks to be available for around 75.00USD, and should have much better support, under Linux.
BTW, you may get a different response if you post this question to the Ubuntu Multimedia & Video forum. You may also get better recommendations of USB ATSC tuners that work well with Ubuntu. Lastly, this is a good article on the subject of Digital TV and Linux, that may provide further useful information.
Good Luck.. -
wow, what a thorough reply JAS! Best I ever recieved in all the years of being online.
I think I will play around with the KWorld stick for a bit, and the easiest route sure does seem to be a new stick and I can ebay the Kworld so no problem there. Thanks for all the great links
is interesting that the Kworld cost $30 and the WinTV $90 but the $30 stick (that many folks buy instead of the expensive one, is the one that doesn't have support. Simply amazing.
