I used to have Ubuntu installed, but honestly, I never used it. It just took up HDD space. I also had XP installed too, but I never really used that anymore either.
I tried KDE4 out a while back though, and I found the entire effects to be glitchy, and it's not like my video card couldn't handle it (it was a 8800GTS 512 mb). Compiz-Fusion worked great under Ubuntu, so I just came to the conclusion that the effects in KDE4 were poorly written.
So, have the fixed the effects? I remember the minimizing/maximizing effect being extremely buggy. I probably won't install Linux again until I get a new computer and make my current one a Linux box, but that won't be until around 2011, after I had graduated from college.

This belongs in the Linux section.

As of today, KDE4 seems pretty solid on the notebook in my sig. The cube is kind of flaky, but I believe it's mainly because you can't set the parameters. (At least not in the default plasma desktop.)
Cheers...

The thing is, KDE uses the KWin backend for the "Compiz"-like stuff, so it can be a bit buggy. I'm not a frequent KDE user (mostly a GNOME and Openbox user) but I believe you can disable KWin and let Compiz handle all the Window Management.
Have you thought about using GNOME or Compiz as a standalone? -
If all goes well, I'll install compiz on KDE today, and report back on how it works.
-
I tried it... I didn't spend hours on it, but when I'd switch to compiz, it would often crash, and even when it didn't crash, window decorations weren't showing up. Also, the four desktops wouldn't all show up on the cube. Overall not to impressive.

Nice find! I'll definitely bookmark that and try it out some time.

Ok. Hope that helps

There are some reasons not to. I remember reading this at the KDE TechBase wiki or and older version of it likely enough a while back (quite a while back). I just skimmed over it again now. Some quotes:

Yeah, I tried working with compiz and it just seemed more trouble than it was worth. I got the window decoration working, but the cube doesn't adhere to the desktops, the settings are all screwed up, and the whole thing is unstable. Integration FAIL.
-
I guess if you really want Compiz, GNOME or the standalone is the way to go
-
Yes. KDE has it's own graphical acceleration toys since 4.0. Check into the preferences... you can get compiz working if you really push it, but it's better and easier to just use KDE's built-in stuff. I find it pretty nice, actually.

It is pretty decent, I just miss the compiz cube, 3D windows, and extensive window effects. Meh.
Need help...
