so I need a new one, I'm just tired of my trying and trying to get my RALINK 2870 to work... tried nearly everything... the stupid driver won't compile...
This card of course will used on a Dual boot, Win 7 Hom Prem and Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on my Desktop and plug and play on BOTH OS's would be nice.
so here are the requirements:
MUST be able to reach 300Mbps my current card can see only G networks... but it is a N card
USB or PCI-express 1x, I'd strongly preferre USB as my desk is in a corner and signals don't get transmitted well.
<150$ (would like to keep it less though, but if it's worth it I'd go that high).
just a thought... can you buy intel cards for desktops? that would solve this whole issue.
Thanks so much!
Edit: if any one really wants a fast computer try this: i7 920 + 6GB ram + 80GB intel SSD + Ubuntu 9.10 x64... wow is all I have to say.

The 2870 should work with the RT2800USB module, but it's still labeled experimental, it won't work in N mode. The patch was submitted last November, so it should be in .33, it's definitely in .34-rc1 (I can see it in the makefile).

I though so too... I created a thread about this a while back: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=433293
basically nothing is working I tried to patch the driver but I get '1 out of 3 failed error'
and compiling with make has a "Error 2" at the bottom. with or without config.mk edited. -

No, that's the ralink-supplied driver, I mean it's in the mainline kernel tree. You should definitely not have any problems if you use the one in the kernel. If you tell me what kernel you're using I can try and give you a step by step.

Is your network hidden (not broadcasting SSID)? Or in N-only (as opposed to mixed) mode?
-
it's broadcasting. my laptop with an intel 5300 has no trouble at all. It is set up in mixed mode.

So you've got the firmware from http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2 copied to /lib/firmware and you can see other networks but not yours? What happens if you type in the SSID to connect manually? Maybe there are some extensions or the wrong preamble type selected on your AP (it should not matter, but some drivers are finicky).
BTW your avatar reminded me of this: http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Swedish_Campground.txt
Anyways if you are set on buying a new card you should be able to find an Intel one on ebay for around 40 bucks max. Edit: hm wait, just read "desktop" in your OP.. so much for that, I assume notebook on NBR. -

You're copying the firmware to /lib/firmware as root (sudo)?
If you can see other networks the firmware probably isn't the issue, it's probably a setting on your AP that is bugging out the driver. It's still experimental so there are probably some quirks like that. -
yah, still no luck... maybe I should try a different router... it's a rosewill so maybe I should move back to a D-link.
Edit: just dug up my crappy 20$ retail plus wifi card from 3 years ago and it connects and works perfectly... but I only get G speed... oh well it's working for now. -
you may also want to have a look through here:

idk..just a thought -
I looked at some of the cards but most are RALINK, and I'm trying to avoid them seeing as I can't get them to work now. -
