What wireless card do you have in your notebook? If you are not sure, open up a terminal window ( In Ubuntu: Applications > Accessories > Terminal ) and enter the following:
    Code:
    lspci
Look for the item that says "Network controller" and post it here.

There is constant and ongoing support and development effort being made in the area of wireless in Linux.

In order to help you, it is likely necessary that you provide:
    a. version of Ubuntu you tried,
    b. version of PCLinux OS you tried,
    c. your wireless hardware Manufact, model#, chipset details.

Both Ubuntu and PCLinux are good distributions, but depending on your wireless hardware they may or may not support your wireless automatically. They may need custom configuring. or its possible you used an older version of Ubuntu or PCLinux and you may need to try with a newer version.

What version of Ubuntu are your trying? Make sure you have the latest version 8.10. Linux makes a lot of progress from version to version. First start here and then start worrying about trying to get your Wifi to work, that will help re leave a lot of the problems.

You don't manually download and install software in most Linux distributions. For example, in Ubuntu, you should go to Applications --> Add & Remove Software (IIRC). From there, you can search for install software with just a few clicks.

Check Hardware Drivers in Ubuntu(System>Administration>Hardware Drivers) for drivers for your wireless.

Make sure it's turned on before you boot up. And you'll need to click on the network icon in the top panel to show the wless networks. ;) :)
