Ok, I am ofcourse new to Linux, so go very slow with me please.![]()
I got an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition CD from my friend, and I decided to install it on my laptop. I kept Vista on it, and I just installed Ubuntu inside Windows, so when I boot up, I can boot in Linux or Windows. I did NOT partition anything, just ran the CD inside Windows and installed from there.
Everything seems to be working ok, but I don't have any sound.But if I plug in headphones in the headphone jack, I get sound. My computer type is in my Sig.
I have looked at many post's about this online, and the majority of them tell you to configure some stuff in the Volume Control with the External Amplifier, like this one:
System->Preferences->Sound
Load up preferences and make sure that each item is checked to appear in the mixer. Make sure none of them are muted.
Then click on the "Switches" tab. At the bottom of the list is an "External Amplifier" switch. Toggle that to off, you should now have sound.
I have tried this, and it makes no sense. I have tried multiple ways of these steps, and not have come across anything that says "External Amplifier".
Can someone help me get sound?

Try 8.10, just download the .iso (or a torrent from the site) and burn it to a CD/DVD using (my favourite) Imgburn. A fairly large number of users have reported that it fixed a bunch of problems that they had in 8.04.

If I download and install 8.10, do I have to re-install stuff like my Wallpapers, my desktop cube, etc etc?
-
That would be best.

Well downloaded and installed Ubuntu 8.10 through the Updates manager. Everything works fine.
Thanks guys! -
tip for next time you install linux - make a separate /home partition, that way all your settings and personal files get saved and you dont need to back them up when you are doing a fresh install (backing them up before an install is always a good idea though incase something goes wrong)

+1. You have to dig into it a little bit to figure out how to manually partition and mount /home correctly, but it's not hard. I'm running a typical 3-partition Linux install (/, swap, /home). I wiped the / partition in order to install 8.04 from 7.10. Made sure to tell the installer "don't format /home" and it kept not only my personal data, but desktop wallpaper, panels just the way I had 'em before, etc.
BTW, glad to hear that 8.10 fixed your sound problem. Mine (still running 8.04) works now but I had to go thru the process you describe to get there. And the headphone jack doesn't kill the frame speakers automatically. I have to go into the Sound menu and disable "Surround". Not a big deal.
No Sound
