has anyone else had their sound completely dissapear when playing games under linux? i dont know how, but all of a sudden when i play counterstrike or wolfenstein i have no sound anymore (i was just playing last night with sound) so im kinda confused as to what happened, all i did was update the kernel (but im still using the old kernel because wifi didnt work on the new one)
-
-
Have you installed or reconfigured anything? Do you use KDE or Gnome? If you use KDE, it sets a lock on the sound device, and it can prevent games and such from accessing it in my experience.
-
and, i dont believe that i have installed or reconfiured anything, unless the last update did something (i really didnt pay attention to what i was updating, other than the kernel is what i noticed so i assumed the rest was just moddifying stuff to work with the latest kernel.) -
SELinux? I haven't used that except under Fedora, and then only minimally. I know it causes a number of strange issues. And a kernel update can definitely cause a number of issues to cascade through the system. I don't know what the specifics of your distro are, though. Perhaps go to a console and type "dmesg" and see if any errors pop up in there relating to sound?
-
dmesg returns no errors at all, is it possible that SElinux is screwing it up even if it is set to 'permissive'? here is what SE has to say:
Code:Summary SELinux is preventing access to files with the default label, default_t. Detailed Description SELinux permission checks on files labeled default_t are being denied. These files/directories have the default label on them. This can indicate a labeling problem, especially if the files being referred to are not top level directories. Any files/directories under standard system directories, /usr, /var. /dev, /tmp, ..., should not be labeled with the default label. The default label is for files/directories which do not have a label on a parent directory. So if you create a new directory in / you might legitimately get this label. Allowing Access If you want a confined domain to use these files you will probably need to relabel the file/directory with chcon. In some cases it is just easier to relabel the system, to relabel execute: "touch /.autorelabel; reboot" Additional Information Source Context system_u:system_r:procmail_t Target Context system_u:object_r:default_t Target Objects root [ dir ] Affected RPM Packages procmail-3.22-19.fc7 [application]filesystem-2.4.6-1.fc7 [target] Policy RPM selinux-policy-2.6.4-8.fc7 Selinux Enabled True Policy Type targeted MLS Enabled True Enforcing Mode Enforcing Plugin Name plugins.default Host Name Christopher-PC Platform Linux Christopher-PC 2.6.22.1-41.fc7 #1 SMP Fri Jul 27 18:21:43 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 Alert Count 9 First Seen Sun 19 Aug 2007 07:33:49 AM CST Last Seen Sun 19 Aug 2007 04:10:06 AM CST Local ID 3297e08a-ede2-4717-80f1-634e28b9a6f0 Line Numbers Raw Audit Messages avc: denied { search } for comm="procmail" dev=sda2 egid=0 euid=0 exe="/usr/bin/procmail" exit=-13 fsgid=0 fsuid=0 gid=0 items=0 name="root" pid=6708 scontext=system_u:system_r:procmail_t:s0 sgid=0 subj=system_u:system_r:procmail_t:s0 suid=0 tclass=dir tcontext=system_u:object_r:default_t:s0 tty=(none) uid=0

Looks like some permissions may have been changed in your home directory for some reason. I can't tell for sure, though. It seems as if that "invalid stage" error is a bug with your OpenGL drivers somehow, might just be a Wine issue. Check your sound system configuration, make sure it's not "locking" the sound card, and that you have OSS emulation enabled as well, if that's an option.
-
i dont think that it will have anything to do with wine, because wolfenstein doesnt use wine and it doesnt have sound. When i open wolfenstein though, i get some problems that may give a better clue as to why sound isnt working. (i highlighted with red what i think is the problem, but i dont know what to do to make that work anyway...)

Yeah. That sounds like the OSS emulation is broken for some reason. Why it is, I have no idea. But that's where you'll want to start when Googling.
-
well, after doing some stuff from this guide:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=83028&page=3
i got pretty much the same error, just instead of getting an input/output error, i got a 'busy' error (it was being used by something else) so, i shutdown my music player (dang, i wanted to listen to music while playing :'( but o well, at least it works now) and now it works fine (for now)
-
Try disabling the sound system. Many media players (like mplayer or xine) will still work with the standard Alsa interface, and that way you can play the games while playing your music.
No sound in games?
