I am running ubuntu 7.10 on LG-S1 and not getting any sound from the speakers, although I get the sound in Vista. I think this should be a driver issue and am not able to find the right diver. I am This appears to be a classic problem of ubuntu but enough scouting of the internet also hasn't turned up any conclusive solution of the problem. Thanks for any help.
PS-I am getting the sound through the headphones if I connect them in ubuntu.

Usually it's the opposite...no sound through the headphones.
Could you give some information about your hardware please? -
try the ALSA drivers
-
hardware is 1.86 ghz core duo,1 gb ram,ati radeon x1600, realtek soundcard( i think this has the intel chipset)
-
If your laptop has the intel chipset, you have lots of company:

There are many solutions, but the one that has you edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base is the simplest. This, unfortunately, did not work for me on my Sony TZ130, and I had to download.
I fixed it as described here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=184958
Good luck.

Did you open the gnome speaker applet (right click on the speaker upper right corner) then left-click on Volume Control, then find the Preferences tab, and check all sources? I don't have mine turned on right now so don't remember the exact steps, but there are a bunch of sources to turn on. Your defaults might be off.
That's one easy thing to try anyway. -
The command lspci will give you the hardware details of your card. It probably has something to do with /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Sometimes you need to ad a line to it. Also, check the links StaffyDaddy gave you.

All the volumes are cranked all the way up.

Have you tried to install linux-backports-modules ?

I have the same issue but I'm using a hp dv9000 with the altect thingy sound card, but my issue is that it's not even working with either headphones or the speakers. Since i'm not at home I'll try some of the tips here and see how it works out I'll report back at 11 pm

In Dapper and Edgy with an earlier Sony laptop, I had the "no sound" problem for a different reason. The cure for that was to run alsamixer from the shell, then look at all the input and output devices until I found "external amplifier". Once I set that to off, I had sound. The default setting presumed that there was an external amp.
Good luck.

Staffy brings up a good point. Open a terminal, type in
Code:alsamixer

Their both up, i don't know where to check if it's enabled but when I i turn it up and down it goes up and down lol so I think it's enabled. I think the problem is when i turn my OS into Ubuntu my easy button that is mute turns orange which I think must be mute but when i push it it functions...shows me muting/un-muting on my desktop. So it could be something else that's not enabling me to hear anything.

I finally got the sound to work on my laptop with Ubuntu 7.10, I followed these instructions to get it up and running on my laptop which is a dv9000(don't remember the exact model cause I'm not at home to tell you this)

After hitting FN key and Mute sound button on the keyboard at the login screen on Windows XP, my ToughBook CF-52 longer had sound. The volume was not muted (as shown in Windows) and after several attempts of uninstalling and reinstalling sound drivers I still did not have sound.
Here is how I fixed it:
01) Make an image of your laptops hard drive using Symantec Ghost or some other image software.
02) Boot-up on the Recovery CD that came with the Laptop and reinstall Windows using the recovery CD.
03) Once you are done and in windows you will be able to hear sound.
04) Shutdown Windows and then use the image software to boot the laptop and reinstall the image you created. This restores the sound even though when you made the image you had no sound. I still have not figured out why and I know it is not a registry or BIOS setting.
Hope this helps someone because it took me a while to figure it out. -
Is there a reason you're insisting on 7.10 instead of 8.04, or even 8.10? I mean, 7.10 has year-old software, which is ancient in the open-source world
