    Hey,
I have no sound from either my speakers or headphone jack. My laptop has Realtek High Definition Audio (according to windows where it works fine). Everything is currently set to auto detect, but have tried all options.
I tried ubuntu about 2 years ago on this same laptop and sound worked fine. It was other hardware issues that forced me to leave.
    Suggestions?

Did you check the mixer levels. I had the same problem a couple of years back, and I just opened up every mixer until I found the one that was the problem.

You've said you've tried them all? Just trying to cover your basis here...
Go to System -> Preferences -> Sound, literally try every one on each drop box and click the test button with each one.
If you have indeed tried that, then I'm sorry I really don't know. :( I had the same issue, and just finding the correct selection (for me STAC92xx Analog works) worked for me. :)

OK, i googled around and came to this site to install the latest alsa drivers. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

I have the 3 files on my desktop. but cant figure out what to do from here. The site says to put them in a download folder which i dont have or cant find so the terminal commands it gives arent working.

I accidently deleted my desktop trying to fix my sound. i was following this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=283155&page=3&highlight=realtek+alc861 (2nd post down)
after i rebooted i was left only with a command prompt. I was using this command "sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop" but it keeps saying it failed or somehting. Help, or i gotta reinstall :(?

ADDED: got it working guys. desktop back and sound. thanks for the help. heres what i used

I'm glad you got it to work. Hardware issues is where most people give up, so kudos to you for staying with it. :D

And thanks for sharing the solution. Too many people end their threads with a "nvm, it's working now."
