welp... Beryl 0.2.0 has been released...
get your sexy on!
-
Any screenshots?
EDIT: Found some. -
well, it's not really much different from the release candidates... just more stability and speed improvements.
-
Cool, cool. Increased stability for Beryl is always welcome.
-
I'll be sure to install it when I get the time
I'm excited! -
It's strange that people label Beryl as unstable; hasn't crashed on me yet. In fact it is quite stable, and I am running ver 0.99 (i think)
-
Once or twice I've had my emerald themes disappear on me.
But some people are experiencing a lot more problems than we are. -
Well, I've never had good luck with Beryl in the past. Crashing, file system errors, etc...wasn't worth my time. Maybe in the future, when I can afford to waste time on fixing it.
-
weird... I just installed it and set some configuration options... no problems yet
the only thing that seems to be not working quite right is that the Scale/Expose function will sometimes not give a window focus properly when switching between viewports. I think it has something to do with the fact that I have the focus following the mouse pointer. -
Filesystem errors? Beryl shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with those. You'd better be more suspect of your hard drive or motherboard than Beryl. I've had Beryl crash on me, but never too bad. Worst I've had was Konqueror locked up the display, and I had to shell in and reboot the machine (and I think that's nvidia's fault, mostly).
-
@Pita - well I have had filesystem errors from programs locking up Linux. Once I froze a Windows program over wine...got some errors for fsck to deal with...once, I basically moved 100 gigs of files, and nautilus couldn't handle it (I think the filenames and paths were TOO long), I locked up X and then fsck had more work to do.
-
Ahhh. Well, that's Gnome for you. Gnome is a flaming piece of doggie doo that's built on an even worse toolkit. Speaking as a programmer, GTK+ really just isn't good in any way, shape or form. It was created in response to the QT toolkit for KDE not being as open as they wanted, but now that QT is fully GPL, there's really no reason to use a sub-standard toolkit, and now that it's being infested with Mono and .NET crap, I have even less of a use for it.
-
Yeah, I am actually finding myself loading up KDE more and more. Once KDE4 hits, I'm reasonably sure I won't load up Gnome again.
-
LOL. Do you, as a pro that you are, suggest I move over to Kubuntu (or just Debian, for that matter?)? I have played with a few KDE distros, but the 'uglier' interface (IMO) gets to me. If you can tell me that's its even more stable or superior to GNOME, then I'll be tempted to make the switch permamently.
-
Stability can really only be judged by you. I've Kopete crash just as much as GAIM.
-
I'm going to stick with GNOME for now, as I personally prefer its appearance... but come KDE4, I may have to seriously re-evaluate that.
-
Ly - what's so wonderful about KDE4 that will make you want to switch?
OK...but stability in the big sense? Like how many times fsck finds errors on every 30th boot? I guess it's possible KDE is kinder to the filesystem? I'm still a newbie when it comes to understanding the nuances of the differences between KDE/GNOME.
BigV - you too should tell me the big secret about KDE4! -
I'm really trying to make myself like KDE because I know how you guys keep talking about how bad Gnome and GTK+ environment is. On top of that, I had a friend (CECS major) tell me that Gnome was bad as well. But I just really can't get into the UI. I think I'm going to have to install Kubuntu 7.04 by itself and force myself to use it because so far, switching between Gnome and KDE (i.e. installing KDE after Gnome) has just caused all kinds of problems that make me want to stick with Gnome. On top of that, Compiz doesn't seem to be available "out of the box" with Kubuntu Feisty as it is with Ubuntu.
-
I don't think I could give you any one thing, but I'm just excited that the KDE project seems to be really trying something somewhat different. GNOME doesn't even really have a direction that it plans to head in, just more bugfixing and small changes.

The problem is that there's very little to actually look at yet. I say re-evaluate because there is of course always the possibility that it could all be hype...
-
If Gnome works for you, use it. It's not going anywhere anytime soon, it's popularity is only increasing. I've heard about the bad stuff too, but I find it perfectly acceptable. It's just that after using KDE, I've been booting it more and more, and I don't know why.
-
So I just installed the new Beryl, and it seems a bit more stable than previous versions... (which is expected, I suppose). I like it... I think I'll be keeping it for a while
OOOO, shiny!
