    Hey all,

Im about to step into my first real Linux en devour and ive read that there are issues with some inspiron 6400s and the x1400 video card with Ubuntu but im not sure if these same issues exist with PCLinuxOS 2007. Ive read some reviews and apparently the PCLinuxOs is a bit more friendly to the complete linux beginner compared to Ubuntu. my specs are:

    Dell Inspiron 6400
    intel core duo 2, 2Ghz
    1gb ram
ATI mobility x1400 (that 256mb w/ hypermemory one)

and all the usual wifi and card reader that they have.

can anyone assist me here, as im quite excited to give it all a whirl. :)

I've got the same specs as you except I have the home and office version(E1505) and I've never had troubles with Ubuntu, I've never tried PCLinuxOS 2007 so I don't know if it is more friendly than Ubuntu but I do know that Ubuntu isn't going to bite you. It just takes a little while to get accustomed to.

I'm using PCLinuxOS 2007 and I love it. So much easier then Ubuntu. Without opening x-term once I have setup to play DVD movies, wmv, avi, mp3, and beryl. PCLinusOS 2007 comes as a live cd so put it in and see how well it works with your hardware.

Be warned that all packages on PCLoS liveCD are pretty old now, meaning you have to download and update quite a bit of packages from relatively slow PCLoS repositories after you install. It is an automated process, but it will take time.

Also, PCLoS and Ubuntu uses different desktop environment. PCLoS uses KDE, where as Ubuntu uses Gnome. There is a KDE variant of Ubuntu (Kubuntu), but it is not very good. Personally, I prefer KDE over Gnome, although I don't use PCLoS.

Probably you can make LiveCD of both (and maybe other distros as well), try them out and see what you like. It is pretty easy to install/overwrite Linux.

Why do you say that? I have a Kubuntu Gutsy install (latest pre-release version of Ubuntu) that's running great. My girlfriend loves her install of it, too. Even have Compiz Fusion running on all of them, works great. Only a few hardware compatibility issues, but that's mostly specialized stuff that all distros have troubles with. Like, her sound card only works with ALSA 1.0.15, rather than the 1.0.14 that ships with Ubuntu. Even though KDE isn't the primary desktop for Ubuntu, it's still most definitely a first-class citizen.
