do you guys think I should get a PS3 just to run Ubuntu and watch movies?
I have been thinking to build a computer media theater system, and PS3 + linux combo look pretty cheap to build.

Buy a cheap PC. I wonder how games in wine would run on a ps3?

I just read that Sony restricts access to the RSX, basically making any complex 3d programs unplayable.

None, the ps3 is based on a powerpc type of cpu...

I think it would be vastly cheaper to get a athlon x2/780g combo.

Well, PS3 itself can play blueray and upscale any other dvd's so thats pretty kewl.

You can install ubuntu and use your ps3 as a pc, surf the net, watch movies in different formats and do your work.

As for games, well games in ubuntu wont work but PS3 itself is a pretty powerful machine and well you can buy PS3 games to play.

If thats all you want it could be worth it.

I have an imac to run PC games anyway. I think with sony card PS3 is selling for $300. I wonder the quality of PS3 and Ubuntu sound system. I plan to use the PS3(ubuntu) to play those itune movies I downloaded on my mac.

If you're using it for ONLY Linux, no, a PS3 is a waste of money for that. Get a barebones machine that's better suited to running Linux that will be able to access all the power of the machine and have more RAM.

If you want to play PS3 games, play Blu-Ray movies and ALSO run Linux from time to time, then yes, a PS3 is a good idea.
