Almost every time i boot into Ubuntu (dual booting w/vista), the desktop loads fine except, the panel/taskbar at the top and AWN at bottom do not show up. they are actually there because i can where "Places" should be and if i've aimed correctly, a drop down menu will open, but the panel will still be invisible.

rebooting right back into ubuntu fixes it most of the time (not everytime), but restarting X server (ctrl+alt+backspace) does not work.

after i get the panel and AWN to show up, compizfusion has defaulted back to desktop wall/cube disabled. i enable the cube and it works, but i have to go enable it.

    possibly a problem with cube/compiz/xserver/?.

Not sure if this will help you or not because it seems as though your problem is sporadic but I had a tough time getting AWN to start when I booted the computer. I had to added to the sessions manager but it would never 'stick.' For some reason I had to change various permissions and now it works well.

Compiz is badass ... when it works. ;) I still think it's an improvement over Beryl..
