    I downloaded Ubuntu and burned the image to a disk. Everything is fine there. I tried to install it on my Toshiba M70. I get as far as setting up the network settings, then I get a black screen. I have tried it three times and can't get past it. Please help. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

    Download 6.10 instead of 6.06, do a disk check to make sure your ISO downloaded and burned properly, and finally run the install. Hope this helps.

    I will try that. What is the difference between 6.06 and 6.10?

    Not much, but I like the video on 6.06 more. First thing I would do is boot from the 6.06 disk and go to the check disk option in its boot menu, make sure you have a good burn.

    Well, I burned 6.10 to disk. It seems to be installing smoothly. I am in the process now. It took 2 restarts to get it to boot the installer properly. I hope I am doing everything properly.

    Successfully installed ubuntu 6.10!!! Wow, I am a first time linux user and it is pretty cool. The OS is snappy and hasn't crashed yet. I am still learning this. The reason why I chose linux was, I lost my restore disks for my toshiba and the HD fried. Instead of buying another windows license I wanted to try linux. Dunno if I will use it in the long run but it is a new experience.

    It's a new version.

    Well, there are new drivers and such. The difference was enough to get it to run on his Toshiba.

    Glad it worked. :)

    Now the problem is I don't know how to install any applications. I have found out you can't just double click on the application to install it. =( Learning!!! Any comments would be awesome.

    It's as simple as going to Applications > Add/Remove.

    If you want to do things a bit more complicatedly, try using Synaptic Package Manager.

    Finally, when you are a "pro" you can use the

    Code:
    $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install app-name-here
    command in the console. Good luck!
