So, i'm thinking of purchasing a used fujitsu siemens lifebook s7010.
According to the review in our site the gpu is Intel 855GME..

I'd like to run Ubuntu Feisty on it, and add compiz (maybe fusion) to it.
Any chance that the GPU could handle it with only a few effects?

    Any replies are welcome. :)

It depends on the effects :D. More likely, you're going to need to leave Compiz out of the mix to have your system running at anything like a respectable speed, unfortunately.

    Doh :)

I assume it's not possible to test Compiz with only live CD running?

I know at one time there were a couple of Compiz Live CDs...I wouldn't know where to find them, though...it was 1-1/2 years ago that I found mine, and even then it was a bit underground because the inclusion of NVidia and ATI drivers violated the GPL.

Hmm, maybe i could get it working if i'd use just fluxbox instead of gnome and add compiz to that.

Some users have reported it works ok. Others have reported some issues that might be addressed as the Intel driver is updated. I would say that you should be ok running Fusion on it.

Sabayon's Live DVD boots up with the latest Compiz Fusion. So you could boot that to check out the performance.

i have it running fine on my i915 ... no problems at all. - ok i lie, for some silly reason when i play a video the player will crash unless i turn of effects off. apart from that the rest of the effects are fine.

That could be just some error in Compiz's settings. I believe i've read ppl having that same problem.

Well, i bought the laptop yesterday. I'll probably start installing Feisty on it this evening. :)
