Please tell us at what point you are having trouble....screenie if you can also might help but not necessary.
Also, why RHEL 4 or 5? Those use oldish kernels which won't have support for some of your newish hardware built into the kernel, well, at least video and wireless. -
Hi,
have a look into you bios settings, if there is some possibility to change things arround SATA. I think on some ntbs there is some possibility to use 'compatibility' mode or something.
I recommend, if you can, to install RHEL 5. Or if you dont have the bought support from RedHat, install CentOS 5.
I use CentOS 5 on my thinkpad r61 and i'm pretty happy ...
If you would like to have 'cutting edge' SW, install Fedora 11. -
+1 on the BIOS.
You might try setting your SATA driver to IDE in your BIOS if that's an option. All of my Vista laptops have been set up with the SATA in AHCI mode and I've had problems running XP and Ubuntu under the ACHI setting. (If you do this, you might have to switch the BIOS back to ACHI to use Vista. I did. I ended up installing Vista under IDE so I my wife could open it without messing with the BIOS).
I don't care for REHL myself. I'm using a image of 5 right now and have used 4 in the past. I don't know it works okay, I guess RHEL just seems like it's a little harder to set up and offers no advantage to me. I used Fedora 7 or 8 a while, back and felt that Ubuntu was a little more polished at the time but I've heard Fedora 11 is really nice.
If you don't have to use RHEL and you just want to test the Linux waters, I would give Ubuntu or Fedora a try. They should be a little easier to install and use. I'm digging Ubuntu Netbook Remix right now. (It will run on anything...not just netbooks.) It's a nice change of pace from the standard desktops.
