WHEW, Instead then I opened /usr/share/applications founnd the app I wanted for my desktop, right click and copy to desktop -easy![]()
It seems the most user friendly disk cloning software for linux is clonezilla. Does anyone recommend a different free solution? Thanks J
I have paragon 12 now that I can launch from cold boot on USB stick; their site says it is compatible with Linux. I test Paragon - the restore completed OK, but now disk utility will not launch, and no USB storage drives are recognized (but USB mouse is fine) I tried various ports . My USB hard drive and sticks all work fine on other computers
~~~ Talin thanks for the info on SCreenShot - Awesome app!
@rant; welcome to linux.
If things don't work out of the box, expect to pull out a lot of hair.
i tested with the live CD (same as the install CD) and I have the same issues. There is a BIOS setting for USB emulation, I tried enable / disable this did not help in either case. (boot from CD or Boot from HDD)
Auto mount did work fine before I created the image, I would put in a USB stick and home folder would auto launch and the drive would appear above the home directory.
I used a command to display the drives, they did appear and I was able to mount using sudo ... commands!
END of STory - I narrowed it down to the imaging program, I was backing up the extended partition (os and Swap) when I restored it , then the aforementioned issues began. -
I like to use ReDO backup for imaging. I have a 500 GIG external hard drive and on it I want to store pictures, photos, music to be shared with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7/8. I also want to store images from Ubuntu and Win 7/8. I will not store any files larger than 3.5 GIG. What is the best file format for my external (500 GIG) hard dirve?
I tried exFAT but the latest version of Redo does not support that file format when I try to image my dell with 12.04 TIA, Josea -
Because Windows does not support ext3/4, you can format the external drive as ntfs. GNU/Linux has pretty decent ntfs support, especially for simple tasks like file sharing. It's been awhile since I've used ubuntu but I think ntfs packages are pre-installed.
It's not that GNU/Linux is more difficult to learn than Windows or Mac OS X. Look at it as if you're going to a New environment. Of courses you'd expect to do some learning. These days when a client brings in their windows computer to be fixed I tend to have to relearn things as well. Google is my friend. And for what its worth, going from GNU/Linux to Windows is a much harder transaction in my opinion. Suddenly you lose all your power and control.
