I just stumbled upon this and I find it pretty cool

    http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html

ReactOS® is an advanced free open source operating system providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft Windows® XP compatible operating system. ReactOS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.

ReactOS is the most complete working model of a Windows® like operating system available. Consequently, working programmers will learn a great deal by studying ReactOS source code and even participating in ReactOS development.

it's still in alpha stage, but it looks promising!

well since it's in early development, I'm sure they're not putting many resources in making it "pretty". They'll get there eventually, when they reach the level of "it works" that they want.

This thing has been in alpha stage for years. I first tested it about a year ago. It was at version 0.2.9 then, it's now at 0.3.1. I don't think you'll be seeing this out anytime soon.

    aww.. oh well.

I guess if more people get involved then it will come out faster.

The thing that's interesting with this is that it would be FREE compared to a gazillion dollards for windows Vista

Why would you WANT to replicate all the badness of Windows? This OS is made by people who haven't ever had to actually program for Windows. The win32 API is backwards and random, programs depend on all kinds of different mis-features on it, there's just no good reason. If you want Windows, use Windows. Otherwise, get a free OS that is actually designed, rather than cobbled together with random backwards compatibility retardedness.

Not to mention that if it became compatible enough, Microsoft would slap a lawsuit on it faster than you can say "software patent violations!"

Well, any effort they put into ReactOS is effort not put into Linux.

Better to let them waste years of effort that would otherwise be put toward an actual threat to Microsoft.
