I am looking at getting a new laptop. Any recommendations? In the past I have had Dell notebooks and have been very happy with them. I plan on running Ubuntu. My main concern is with hardware compatibility. My price range is under $1000.

I am a Thinkpad fan myself. Look into Lenovo Thinkpads. They have very good Linux compatability. In fact there is a whole site dedicated to Linux on Thinkpads -> Here

My Thinkpad runs great with Ubuntu. With a few minor fixes from the site Fire Snake provided, pretty much everything works. Lenovo always has some kind of sale going on. You should be able to get something decent for around $1000.

If it has ATI graphics, make sure it 3200 series or newer.

I would shop around for the computer that best meets your needs and budget.
Once you have it narrowed down, search for the model and ubuntu in google. Look to see if there have been any issues, if solutions exist for those issues and if you're brave enough to execute those solutions.
If you find a laptop that runs ubuntu without too much hassle, you're good to go. The nice thing is that when the next release, 9.10 arrives, it will probably fully support your hardware. -

If you going to game on your laptop I will really recomend for you to get a laptop with a nvidia gpu.

Most of the newer laptops/notebooks with newer generation hardware should work well with Ubuntu. Except for those clevo/sager rebadged oem ones with SiS video graphics, which is a tough nut to crack ... especially to .deb distros. Alternatively, .rpm based distros may have no problem working with SiS chipsets.
