Anyone have any experience with this?

any major issues? would I expect the same battery life compared to running in vista?

You'll get worse battery life in Linux. Generally it's better to go with Intel parts as they offer excellent Linux support.

i had no real problems installing fedora, opensuse, *buntu... a few minor bugs here and there which were easy to fix with a little big of googling.

as zaz said, you'll get less battery life. not much of an issue if you're like me and almost always tethered to a socket.

It may be worth it to read the user submitted reports of folks running Linux on their T400s from Tuxmobil. I think the issue of better laptop power management under Windows than Linux, is overstated. I think that the main problem is that it's a bit more difficult, (although not lots more), to tune a laptop to prolong battery life under Linux, than Windows.

For example, one T400 user report mentions that battery doesn't "seem to last as long under Ubuntu as Windows", while another user report mentions a battery life of "about 4-5 hours (6 cell battery) when doing non energy consuming tasks". The difference is that this second user report then goes on to state the various tweaks they installed in order to prolong battery life. I think if you invest the time and effort, you can get the Linux laptop power management to be as good as the Windows laptop power management, especially if you use things like laptop-mode-tools.

    Good Luck..

You can scale the CPU, and having done that, I definitely get better battery life than I used to; that being said, Vista still is probably a bit longer for me. Also, with updated distros, the life seems to get better.

    Cheers... :)

It'll be there someday, but it's not quite as good as Windows right now.

You strike me as someone who shouldn't be saying anything at all. What have you actually done?

Does it matter? All I'm saying is that you should back up what you say. Give reason. The topic is power management. And haha, you changed your post.

Then why did you ask? That's the power of being a mod. Sure, I could have said go into PowerTop, but that seemed beyond the OP's ability level for the moment. Though I've toyed with various Linux distros for about 10 years, I'm still sort of a newb myself.

If linux is a hobby, try vmware or virtualbox.

I have to give you the funniest post of the day award. ZaZ is well respected member of NBR forums who has help me and many others on many occasions with all kinds of issues. You have the guts to call him a moron? also you have contributed nothing to this thread. just read through your first post which I have qouted above

    Have a good evening.
