I am mostly a Windows user, but like to play with Linux (however my knowledge on Linux is still very limited). I recently installed openSuse 10.2 on my DELL M1210 notebook. Everything works great except the mic, previously I had Ubuntu 7.04 but same problem. I don't have the integrated AV package/mic, I'm talking about a mic connected via the normal mic jack. Nothing can be heard in skype or any other voice recording application. I tried changing all possible settings I could find, but nothing worked [switched between OSS & ALSA, checked volume and mute settings, changed "configure desktop" > "sound system" settings, changed Skype settings etc..]
However I only changed whatever settings accessible through a GUI, I didn’t manually install drivers nor edit any configuration files.
Then I searched the web, but didn’t come up with a solution either. However I noticed many people reporting mic problems with integrated Sigmatel , but no fixes. Any of you guys have any luck?

bump...
Hard to believe that no one here use a Sigmatel STAC92xx sound card under Linux (with mic). -
I have some issues with the sound card, too.
Make sure the volume is turned up using alsaconfig/alsamixer. Then, if I run KRecord (and record a short piece) before launching Skype, my mike works. (Strange, right? I don't know where I got this suggestion from...)
I haven't tried the new Skype for Linux beta yet, but maybe it doesn't have the issue... -
STAC 92xx series sound card, Mic (Audio In) doesn?t work
