What problem did you have before Zoid?
Were you unhappy with Debian Mint on the Precision?
Do you prefer SL6 over debian?
I have burned the live dvd, and I am attracted by the lure of RHEL code (I am currently running Ubuntu 10.10). I am wondering if I should switch to SL6 or Debian...
Any experience with security software on SL6? I want to explore SE linux/apparmor -
The problem before was low sound, and that's completely fixed. I'm testing it right now...being early, RPMForge isn't quite ready for RHEL 6 yet, but I'm getting everything codec wise enabled.
Idk, for my machine (Precision m6500) I prefer a powerhouse like SL6...i.e. very professionally maintained; I'm not saying that Debian is NOT, but I like the support. I'll report back if I run into any big snags but don't think I will.
Now with SL6, you'll have to go to the Cent forums or subscribe to the SL mailing list which I am....losts of Admininstrator types there so not very exciting but good for problems. -
Zoid, thats wierd, I was under the impression Debian had BETTER support, as lots of people using it, Ubuntu instructions apply etc.
SL6 = very small community so not much support, esp since CentOS6 is nowehere on the horizon.
If things were working properly on your Debian box, why switch?
Could you write a very brief configuration guide for SL6, eg things like:
--how to and which repos to enable,
--how to install compiz,
--how to install various multimedia codecs,
--how to install propiatary NVIDIA drivers etc?
--how to use security software. -
quickly...running, but I meant that RHEL 6 has enterprise level support, and using SL6 that will flow down to you.....I'll post back on the repos....haha

For anyone installing this, be AWARE of this:
When you first boot it will go directly to SL....don't panic dual booters! Go into /boot/grub/grub.conf and comment out "hiddenmenu" and change the timeout to something humanly possible like 10 seconds from Zero seconds!
Reboot and you'll see grub and the windows option. No worries.
Sidenote: This release should be supported until 2017. -
I'm waiting on the RPMFusion repo to come up....butl now my videos and flash play, mp3's and m4a music files. oh yeah, libdvdcss2 is available in the regular third party repos among other goodies. -
What I've found so far: All is working just fine. I had to cherry pick a couple of rpms from rpmfind.net like ntfs-config and preload for example, but it's making a great desktop so far.
EDIT: With SL6 my suspend works with intel_iommu=on as boot/grub option. Debian Squeeze required a kernel replacement. So far, for my machine, therefore, because of suspend, I would say this is the best desktop linux I've found yet for this Precision. Dell Precision laptop users take note!....
