In all the distros I've tried so far (Mint, Ubuntu, OpenSuse), I've exerienced screen tearing in both flash and files played through eg. VLC. Is there any option for Vsync in Linux like there is with Aero in Windows? This is the main thing keeping me from switching.

Whatever the standard download from Ubuntu is. Not sure if it's a bug, but if I found an app that gives vsync, DRICONF.

Is it the latest version of Ubuntu i.e. 11.04 (a simple command 'uname -a' should tell the running kernel version) ? Post your hardware config as well esp the graphics card ?

I don't have my machine right now. Downloaded and installed Ubuntu just a couple days ago from their site, so the latest version 11.04, whatever the kernel is in this one:

Sorry, forgot to add the graphics card. Intel HD3000.

I believe it is 2.6.38.
Have you installed the proprietary drivers (if using AMD/nvidia) ? If using intel, check if there is any updated set of drivers that what is installed.
I dont know/remember how it works in Ubuntu but in openSUSE you need to install the proprietary codecs and plugins from the packman repo (there are 1-click installers which do this for you). xine/gstreamer/some other backend for VLC or any other player need to be installed for these to work properly as well.
Is that the video is only experiencing propblems or you hear audo stutters/pops as well ? -
