After tried many times of installing the new 2.6.22 distro on either Gusty 7.1 and Mint 4, I have to jump back here and ask if you guys solved any similar problem that I am facing.

    1. For my Compaq V3000z, I can only install AMD64 distro. The i386 CD will never even boot up. I don't know Y. The ALSA 10.14 and 10.15 have lot problem with my conext HD. For 10.14, I can sometimes got luck boot up and has the sound, but may or may not have it after next boot. For 10.15, I never get any sound.

    2. For my desktop: an old 939 MSI RS480 motherboard, I can only use Feisty 7.04 CD to boot up and install. Not Gusty AMD64/i386. Not Mint 4. I can boot it up using Mint 3.1, but not later distro. Once the system is installed, the upgrade is OK. But I would like to know if it is possible to solve from installation step.

Try PCLinuxOS, or the champ of hardware support (at least on my laptop), Mandriva. If you have any problems with those, I may be able to help you. I don't know enough about Ubuntu or Mint to be able to help you, yet.

No, I haven't tried to boot alternate CD yet. But I read some other guy in ubuntuforum installed the AMD64 on DV2000Z, so I tried that.

When you see the boot options for the CD. You should be able top get to a command prompt which just says boot:

    Try this:

    linux noacpi

    Same as above

I will try i386 on my desktop for that.

For AMD64 on desktop, it doesn't even give me any chance to hit the keyboard. It just error out.

OK, now I solved part of it.

The alsa works on my lappy now. Here are what I did:

    1) install linux-source and extract it using root
    2) sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko /tmp
    3) sudo ln -s /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.22 /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/source
    4) Download alsa 1.0.15rc3 and recompile it as everybody known already.
