This kid in my core science class is like some kind of a computer system and he used components online to customize this thing called SLAX. What can you guys tell me about it? Is it possible to run windows on a computer and also use SLAX sometimes? Is SLAX any good? Stuff like that. I would love if someone could explain all of this to me.

Slax is based on Slackware, which is just a distribution of Linux.
Read up on Linux in general and you'll find most of your answers.
If you just want a good distribution of Linux that will work right out of the box, I recommend Linux Mint.

If you'd like to try out Linux first before installing it, you can use one of the various LiveCD's available.

As mentioned Slax is a unix-like computer operating system distribution that is built on the linux kernel. It is actually a LiveCD Linux distribution based on Slackware, that was created and is developed by Tomá Matějíček in the Czech republic using his Linux Live scripts. What that means is that the original intent behind Slax was to be able to boot and be run from a CD, or now, from a USB memory stick. Many other users have simply installed it directly to their hard drives as well. You can read more about Slax at the following links;

Lastly it is quite popular for Linux users to install both a Linux distribution as well as a Windows operating system, on their computer, at the same time. This is known as a dual boot configuration, and it allows the user to be presented with a choice when the computer boots, to either boot to the Linux distribution, or boot to the Windows operating system. There is even this thread in the Slax User Forums which describes a procedure for installing Slax on an existing Windows computer.
