Looks like some people are not having those issues, and are finding that Ubuntu 8.10 outperforms Vista pretty much across the board.
Here's the Slashdot article on it: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/31/160242

I like the new darker themes. Looks very nice. And, as always, Ubuntu is very responsive and everything worked out of the box, haven't had any problems yet
I need to play with it more though... -
The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
An interesting read on why not to upgrade to 8.10 -> here

What he says about long-term support is true, though. And if your machine is running fine with 8.04 and you don't want any of the features of 8.10, there's little reason to upgrade. -
Has anyone tried Ubuntu 8.10 on an Acer Aspire One yet? I tried to install it, but the partition manager kept spitting out an error about not being able to mount my hard drive and partition it. I also got the same error when I was trying out EEEbuntu, really weird. It also seems to kill wireless in 8.10 whereas it works in 8.04.

Good luck

Still no bugs, just some changes for the worse, IMO. For example, now when you hit Control+Alt+Delete, it comes up with only two options(Log Out and Switch User), and it's just a normal window, which you can minimize and maximize, unlike previously, where you got like 7 options. Locking the screen is very annoying too, you have to go to System>Lock, and in most situations, this can be inconvenient, since usually you're locking your screen since you don't have enough time to log-off(or that's what I find). And the new Network Manager hasn't grown on me.
Other than that, everything, as stated before, is going good.
EMZ=P
EDIT: BTW, I haven't tried changing the changes back, so yeah, have mercy flamers! -
I'm with you Emor, the whole 'quit' experience is very much subpar. I like the 60 second timer, but besides that, it feels like they're trying to keep the System menu from feeling empty. The buttons on the windows are unnecessarily big, and there's just no need for the splitting they've done.
I'm kind of shocked they'd go through all that trouble when there's the problem of overloaded Preferences and Administration menus right above that. I'm not a big fan of sub-submenus like in Fedora, but it's certainly better than Ubuntu's default. -
The log out and switch user problem is with gnome, not just with Ubuntu, hopefully it'll be fixed in a gnome update
-
For me incompatibility issue with Xorg.conf was a huge let down and the system as a whole seemed a little buggier than Hardy, but after tweaks and getting used to not using Xorg.conf, I found this release more responsive and playable(?). So far I love it

just installed ibex...unlike hardy, it recognized all the hardware or my new laptop so I'm pretty happy!
-
I used a torrent to get the .iso and it only took a few minutes but now I'm bogged down trying to update and install packages via APT.
-
I'm working on a fix.
AKA a package manager using torrents or http.
-
Everything is working on my G50V-A2, even suspend..............and resume
-
What the hell? I've just unmuted my latop for the first time since the beta and what do I hear? The crappy welcome they have been using since like forever.... **** the beta welcome sound was so much better sounded much more modern and was SHORTER too...
-
Gotta say I'm impressed. My 3G modem worked right out of the box, no longer do I have to use that ****ty program by Vodafone. Just connect modem, configure, connect to the net. Took me about 30 seconds to get online.
Once online, I got the drivers for my Atheros5007, installed the usual programs and it's now fully updated. It will never replace Vista on my computers, but it's a nice alternative when you feel like using something different. And it's also good to have Ubuntu on an external HD or flash disk if your copy of Windows breaks for some reason. -
One thing I did notice-none of my data was transferred from my windows copy of Firefox 3 using the migration wizard. No big deal, though.
Now that I have Office installed, I'll be using it a lot more -
I'm still having sound issues. I can't seem to find the right fix. I also couldn't get my crossover install to run. I ran in terminal, it says unpacking for a sec and then the terminal quits.
*edit- Got crossover running.
Current issues-
No sound. Haven't tested using headphones yet. It may fix it. I think my sound is trying to come out of my mic at the moment.
Power icon keeps dissapearing even though I have it set to always display. Power manager also locks up or looks like it or comes up minutes after I launch it roughly half of the times I try to launch it.
General system unresponsiveness. Apps lock-up. System takes longer than I expected to boot. I used 7.04 for quite a while on a different machine and it had none of these problems. Unlike windows, unresponsive apps don'y generally lock-up the machine. One did once though.
MY KEYS KEEP REFOCUSING TO DIFFERENT BOXES/TO THE MIDDLE OF MY SENTENCE!!! This just started happening up a min ago for no apparent reason.
Pidgin won't work. I assume this is something to do with compiz. It loads my buddy list, but locks up if I try to open a menu or send a message.
This release doesn't seem very stable. I think a good amount of the problems might stem from gnome. I want to use xfce for gaming anyways, so I'll see if that fixes anything. -
Just be mindful when you set it up, and save a separate backup. If you choose the wrong option you could overwrite your bookmarks, although it does always check for approval the first time you change the setting, and it doesn't sync automatically when you first start up Firefox, so you have a chance to recover from another machine. -
On my Dell, Hardy Heron couldn't get the wireless or proper screen resolution. With Intrepid Ibex, it got everything right; impressive.
On my T42, absolutely everything works, but that is to be expected with a ThinkPad.
Overall impressions are neutral; I think they made under-the-hood changes, such as the new kernel + driver modules. There aren't many immediately apparent changes to the way things are done, but there are little new things such as tabbed file browsing and quick search added to Synaptic. The boot time appears to have been improved, but then again it might be because I'm using reiserFS. Oh, and the wallpaper looks like a coffee stain. -
And I think it actually looks good.
-
PS; its still a coffee stain. -
-
Faster. What version did you use previously? It seems a lot slower to me.
-
Dramatic speed bump for me from just a few updates. -
)
-
B. Has been out 4 days and there's already updates? -
B. Yeah.... it was quite odd to see updates on the day after the release, but when compared to gutsy which had more than 10 updates on the launch day it isn't too bad at all. -
So I got the updates. Haven't used them long enough to know how much improvement, but pidgin still won't work. It locks up if I send a message. I tried turning off gnome's effects and the problem persisted.
-
-
Hmmm... nothing reproducible, yet, but I was messing around with an xmpp account's settings and I got a hard freeze. I had to power off with the switch. Is it just Pidgin freezing, X, or the entire system?
-
Just pidgin. The weird thing is, I'm pretty I used it when I first installed 8.10. I was excited to have working wifi. I have no idea what I installed that could have messed it up. I tried reinstalling to no effect.
The updates fixed the responsiveness issues. I have not noticed the power management issues since either. I'm about ready to scrap my beloved pidgin in favor of something...that works.
When I export my compiz settings it doesn't add ".profile" to the name. I either have to add that or browse all files when importing back in. All my settings come in correct though. -
Maybe it's a plugin you enabled? Did you install the plugin pack? Maybe it has to do with a certain protocol you're using, or a DNS issue (ipv6?)
-
I dunno why, but I took a screenshot. It won't be of much help, but it does prove I'm not a crazy guy saying things.
I really think I may reinstall and carefully watch what I install to see what causes the issue.Attached Files:

How can no one be having this problem!!!!!!!!
I just reinstalled. Problem persists. Locks up when I message.
~!@~!#!@#
Stuff like this is why I always go back to windows. As much as I love the advanced configuration possibilities and freedom, I also like things to work without 14 hours of troubleshooting. Especially when things like this happen and no one else has the problem. Going to do an MD5 check of the disc.... -
-
MD5 on the ISO checks out. Checking the cd I used. This is getting ridiculous. NO ONE? REALLY?
Pidgin is one of my favorite apps. I've used it since gaim first came out. I really don't want to use anything else. I like it. -
and like magic...pidgin works.
I'm still having problems with my text refocusing. -
anyone know how to set the top desktop panel to default?
the right side with clock, network, and user info is all screwed up and i'd like to restore it to default. -
You may want to try these:
Emesene
Kopete
aMSN
and Empathy. -
Ibex seems to be beating the crap out of both Vista and Heron on my Compaq. Haven't any issues what so ever with Pidgin.
-
I just wish I could get my sound working.
-
You did nothing? Because I am having this problem too. Fresh install of 8.10 yesterday and haven't had a problem until an hour ago. Toshiba A135 S4656. Don't know why and I have to work on this computer so I might give up and move on to Kopete and see if it works for me. I just don't get it. -
I reinstalled and at first it didn't work...after I finished downloading updates and added some libs it just worked. It has since. I dunno what to tell you. Try reinstalling. Um. Beg the gods?
-
I have been searching everywhere for somebody who has the same issue as me.
I've been having the same problem with Pidgin freezing up. I'll say it seems to happen more often when I'm running firefox, and firefox seems to act slower when Pidgin is acting up...
When I was running the BETA test I didn't have ANY problems and was very excited for this release... but after the updates I started having several problems. Pidgin freezing, mail-notification generic errors, and firefox freaking out every time I open it up. (it displays what seems to be a snapshot of the system all chopped up, or whatever page I was last on)
I did a fresh install after the full release came out, and I'm still having the same issues. Everything else works perfectly, but I need my Pidgin to work...
I'm going to try the ubuntuforums, too. I feel a bit better now, knowing there are other people having the same problem now...

This issue is very odd. It seems to strike at random. I thought I was the only one to have it at first, but then with some googling I found others. Not really sure what the "fix" is though. Pray? Hope? Luck?
-
Weird - Pidgin is always stable for me?!?!?
So who's up for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex?
